In the small town of Lake Station, Ind., the news that the mayor, his wife and stepdaughter have been indicted on federal corruption charges this week came as little surprise.

Residents in Lake Station, one of many working-class towns that fringe the northwest Indiana industrial centers of Gary and Hammond, have seen FBI agents leaving the town hall several times in recent years.

On Thursday, Keith Soderquist and his wife and personal secretary, Deborah, were in federal court in Hammond to face charges of wire fraud and filing false tax returns, after allegedly using money from Soderquist’s campaign fund and the town’s food pantry to gamble at a nearby casino.

In a separate indictment, Keith Soderquist’s stepdaughter, Miranda Brakley, was charged with embezzling money from the town court while working there as a clerk, and the Soderquists also face charges for attempting to conceal their receipt of $15,000 on her behalf.

Trib writer Andy Grimm: Chief, we've got another Democrat with his fingers in the till.

Editor: OK, write it up but don't say which party he belongs to.

Andy Grimm: Will do, chief, pretty clever of you.

Editor: Yeah, the rubes will never figure out it's a democrat; good thing we're smarter than our readers!

Not certain of Indiana but most local elections techically are non partisan, even the election for Chicago Mayor. The last mayoral election which was partisan in Chicago was in 1980 I believe.

You normally won't. When the media is forced to report on a democrat the story takes on a passive tone, as we all know.

Someday I'd like to see a panel of wll known , high paid "journalists" sit for questions from average citizens on why they feel the the need to slant news.
