BEIRUT - Syria´s embattled president marked Easter with a tour Sunday of an ancient Christian village recently recaptured by his forces, an important symbolic prize for his government ahead of coming presidential elections he appears poised to contest. President Bashar Assad´s visit to Maaloula, some 40 miles northeast of Damascus, serves a propaganda victory for his government in its quest to be seen as protector of religious minorities as its civil war grinds on. In about the same way as saving fifteen children from a burning building serves as a propaganda victory for the local fire department.
Dictators are often tolerant toward all religions because all they care is political support and acceptance of their rule. Only a shortsighted dictator would be fueling the fire of rebellion against him - just ask Saddam Hussein.
Given the alternative, Bashar Assad is the preferred candidate in Syria. Hopefully he learned a lesson or two and will order his secret police to not create martyrs for no reason (which is what started the war.)
And kidnap a bunch of Nuns, and behead Priests.
And I guess Zero wnts to make sure to muck up the elections in case Assad wins?
