Feds: USPS worker takes disability, goes fishing ( Alaska )

A former U.S. Postal Service employee in Anchorage was arraigned Friday on charges he accepted at least $334,000 in disability and worker's comp payments while he spent his summers fishing.

The U.S. attorney's office says in a Friday release that 56-year-old Amacio Zamora Agcaoili Jr. was indicted by a federal grand jury on 18 counts, including theft of government funds.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Yvonne Lamoureux also claims Agcaoli lied about not working when he was paid for preparing tax returns and immigration paperwork.

Authorities also claim he failed to tell the Social Security Administration about his worker's comp payments, to which he wasn't entitled.

They claim every summer between 2009 and 2013, he went dipnetting and fishing on multiple occasions despite being on disability.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Half the cops in my Town retire on disability.

“Didn’t know Alaskans had such exotic names.”

I was watching “Deadliest Catch” some years back and the crab boat in question was heading for a processing plant on some little island waaaay up north. As they approached, they had to hail the dock in Spanish. They go where the work is.

Our former Congress critter was on disability for twisting his leg getting out of a car. Yet he was known as best basketball player in DC politics and did you see him bounce down the steps after Clinton’s impeachment. Dated but inbred crook for a cop.

Wow, doing jobs Alaskans won't do. Who knew?

It seems to me that whether spending his time fishing is proof that his disability claim is fraudulent or a reasonable way for a disabled postman to spend his days very much depends on the mode and method of fishing.

It’s been a good two years at least. I’m not up on my Norgerian (Norwegian?), but what I heard sure struck me as Spanish, another language I don’t speak. It could have been what you said.

I have degenerative disc disease. I can do alot...but not for very long and depending on what I do I may have to plan on spending the next day in bed.
Most people do not know that I have it because they see me at my best. Went to a huge BBQ today and I was ok. By the time we got home I could barely walk. If you asked the people there how I was I am sure they would all say fine.
I try not to let my condition stop me from doing anything I want but I know my limitations and I know there is absolutely no way I could hold down a job. Besides what employer would be ok with me working my tail off one day and calling in sick the next day.....every time.

Trust me, dipnetting is much more strenuous than fishing with a rod and reel.

He received the payments 'by engaging in a scheme to defraud the federal government about the nature and extent of his injury and about the other work he was performing and income he was receiving,'.

At a doctor’s appointment in July 2009, the defendant described the pain from his lower back as 'unbearable and constant,' ranging from eight to 10 on a pain scale, according to the indictment.

His suffering was exacerbated by a list of physical activities: sitting, standing, walking and changing weather conditions, he allegedly said. He also reportedly used a cane to walk.

$334K over a 5 year period?

That’s one heck of a benefit payment.
