SIERRA VISTA — The Type 1 Incident Management Team that has overseen containment efforts of the Brown Fire since Tuesday will transition out of command on Sunday.
Minimal fire growth occurred Friday, in part due to increased humidity and lower temperatures, and Hot Shot crews continued to reinforce the hand line of cleared vegetation and fuels surrounding the fire perimeter.
These crews also stared work on the areas inside the hand lines, extinguishing smoldering spots closest to the line.
The fire was declared to be 25 percent contained on Thursday evening by Clay Templin, commander of the Type 1 Incident Management Team.
The line of containment is located mostly along the southern flank of the fire.
At Thursday’s public fire information meeting, Templin said he was comfortable with beginning reductions in resources, including those crews that have been completed contingency work in Sawmill Canyon and Ramsey Canyon.
A Friday morning fire update indicated that the Type 1 team would transition leadership of fire containment efforts to a Type 3 team on Sunday.
As of Thursday morning, an estimated 300,000 gallons of water and retardant has been used to halt the fire’s growth, said Sierra Vista Deputy Fire Chief Ron York.
The last week provided the city with an opportunity to ensure its response plans for incidents such as wildfires were working well.
“I can’t say we had any glitches. We were prepared,” York said.
From setting up an emergency operations center at the police department, to the joint mobile command site with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, and the intercommunication with county emergency service coordinators, York said he was pleased with the city’s performance.
A final public fire information meeting is set for tonight at 7 p.m. at the Sierra Vista fire station at 675 Giulio Cesare Ave.
Precipitation comes to Huachuca Mountains
Overcasting clouds covered the Sierra Vista area Friday morning, bringing with them a bit of rain into the Huachuca Mountains.
“There probably is a little bit of a shower going on. Nothing too significant at this time I would think, but the increasing humidity is certainly helping out the cause for getting that fire put out,” said Steve Drozd, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Tucson.
Chances for rain will be about 40 percent, by Saturday afternoon.
