A suspect is in custody after five people, all youths in their teens to 20s, died following early-morning stabbings in northwest Calgary.

The stabbings happened around 1:20 a.m. MT on Tuesday at an address in the 100 block of Butler Crescent N.W., police said.

According to neighbours, the youths had been celebrating the last day of university classes with a fire in a home's backyard.

You don’t sometimes, it’s why you remain situationally aware and carry.

Megadeth – Dread And The Fugitive Mind Lyrics

Play Song On Your Computer

Let me introduce myself I’m a social disease .
I’ve come for your wealth leave you on your knees .
No time for feeling sorry, I got here on my own .
I won’t ask for mercy, I choose to walk alone .

What’s yours is mine and what’s mine is mine too .
If you shake my hand better count your fingers .

What if I do get caught? what if there is no judgment? .
If I’m right I lose nothing, if you’re right I lose it all .
I ought to get caught because I’m doing something wicked .
I’m guilty haunted by my fear and the only consequences .
Are dread and the fugitive mind .

You built walls to protect you so no one will infect you .
Pursued by those out there that vanish in thin air .
Come a long way to find what you really left behind .
You don’t know when the end is but it’s coming fast .

Depends what you carry! A handgun in this country? Not very likely and difficult to get certification. Frankly, I wouldn’t want one, anyway.

This is such a horrific tragedy. My first thought was: “this kind of incident doesn’t happen in Calgary’! But obviously it does and it did. There is no place on earth safe from the evil in people’s hearts.

Calgary is a city of 1.1 million people. Here are the homicide stats for the last few years. Calgary is still a safe place to live, considering these are the annual and not monthly counts.

calgary annual homicides
source: CBC Calgary

2008 - 29
2009 - 23
2010 - 14
2011 - 10
2012 - 16
2013 - 22
2014 - 5 (until this morning)

The cumulative homicide rate for this year just doubled today from the stabbing spree. I think the city and its good people are in shock today over this senseless massacre.

Crime is racial. American Caucasian crime rate is no higher than Canada or Europe.

On the other hand, young black men in the US are about 3% of the population and commit 50% of the murders.

"Saudis...barely studying"

Because most of them know when they go back SA, their daddy the sheik will get them a secure job where they just have to show up to pick up a paycheck. How do I know this? I have an in-law who worked for a Mideast oil company. The only people who did any work were the Europeans and the (east) Indians. The locals just showed up to get their guaranteed paychecks. Why they had to go to school when their pay was guaranteed, I don't know.

Oh ya,I haven’t been there in forever, I should check that out heh.

When I say that, I mean western Canadian, most of Saskatchewan, and British Columbia are the same, as is northern Ontario.

The trouble is the populated part of ON, QC, and the eastern seaboard save for a handful of scattered conservatives.

Out west we are not culturally the same, and all the east wants is to keep taking our money, it’s frustrating, it’s unappreciated by most and it’s communism, and I don’t like it.

Unless I’m mistaken strict gun control laws...perhaps even similar to those in Europe...are in force in Canada. Therefore,if Canada’s anything like us there’ll now be noisy demands for knife control there...just as routine occurs in the British House of Commons (I kid you not...”knife control” is a hot topic there).

I think I can begin to understand where Bulwyf is coming from.Although I was born in Massachusetts, raised here and have lived here all my life I'm not even *slightly* proud of my home state.I am.OTOH,still proud of the *country* of my birth, although Osama Obama has done much in the last 5 years to lessen that pride. But I must say that from where I'm standing Canada, imperfect as it is,is a good country and its citizens would be justified in feeling lucky to call her "home".

Having experienced this from both sides of the border, I'll make the following statements that reflect my own perception (nothing more):

1. Personally, I've always felt more safe in Canada than in the U.S. -- especially in cities. There's just seems to be something more civilized about the way people live in a British system like that.

2. Conversely, I've felt less exposed to property crime in the U.S. than in Canada. Maybe it has something to do with lenient sentencing and excessive protections for juvenile offenders in Canada, or simply the lack of fear anyone has in Canada of encountering an armed person willing to protect his property. But it seems like I've seen an inordinate amount of vandalism, theft and break-ins when living and traveling up there.

I agree fully with what you have just posted on this one post. I grew up in Ottawa and lived in various locales in E. ON before moving to AB over 20 years ago during the recession. What I noticed immediately, was a 'can do' and 'will do' attitude in Alberta, 'In spite of the East, we'll succeed'. The attitude in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal was one of, 'What can the government do for me?'

Unfortunately, that attitude is still pervasive there, and on the BC Lower Mainland. Personally, and I think it should be obvious, I prefer the attitude in Alberta to the attitude in urban Ontario, else wise I would not be here. Being of UEL stock, I have the greatest respect for the Crown, but I also have great respect for our American brothers and sisters. I do however, believe in Canada, a Canada as envisioned by our Fathers of Confederation, a country whose name is based on Scripture, 'The Dominion of Canada'. THAT Canada is not necessarily lost, though it is in hiding and has been under attack for decades by socialists and atheists. THAT Canada is worth trying to save!

I believe that there is still a poor underclass in Saudi Arabia. I am sure that the attitude of superiority amongst many of the wealthy is also expressed onto the poor in SA. I feel sorry for them. As Christianity covertly expands in SA, I am certain that many poor will come to Christ.
