SIMMONS: Food police are leaving your school kids unfed

**SNIP**

So instead of serving foods they do like, including french fries, some school authorities participating in the taxpayer-funded National School Lunch Program have decided to make smart choices on their own — and that No. 1 choice is to opt out of the program.

One Illinois superintendent, of the Monticello School District, recently lamented to The News-Gazette that “The guidelines require us to serve items like three orange vegetables a week. Can you name three orange vegetables?” said Vic Zimmerman. “Squash, sweet potatoes, they wouldn’t eat them. Kids like carrots but not three times a week. You’ve got to serve them, but the kids won’t eat them, so there’s a huge waste of food.”

And money.

Local, state and federal dollars help cover free and reduced meals for underprivileged school kids, and they help subsidize full-price meals for other kids.

Not a difficult solution...pack your kid a lunch, like the old days.

A group of Texas high school students have started a movement to get Michelle Obama and her regulations out of their cafeterias. The next day, the Obama Administration doubled down and issued a decree banning all junk food from schools.

This will be a case study in how to create life-time libertarians.

In several locations those packed lunches have been confiscated by lunch room Nazis.

Back in the olden days there was usually a malt shop across from the school for kids who didn’t want to eat in the cafeteria.

Then the schools started closing the campus so no one could go there.

School lunches in the 1950s-64 were really good(Except for the Aztec NM which was beyond horrible).

When you take the federal dollars, you dance to the federal piper’s tune - or else.

Across from the high school where my son goes there is a small taco bell knock off, a pizza place and a mickeyds. Come 3:30 they are packed with kids getting a chance to eat. The other day my oldest son commented some one screwed up and actually sent real chicken strips to the school, the kids were devouring them and asking for seconds. Most of the time the meal is a mystery meat-aka soy whatever, some veggie and soy milk or water and no salt or pepper allowed.

Into the trash cans when the kids throw out all the food the cafeteria staff are forced to put on their trays that the kids will never eat.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the “other” articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
