Concerns that West African Ebola Virus May Have Spread to Morocco
The Moroccan Times ^ | Apr 10th, 2014 | Staff member

Moroccan media outlets Goud.ma and Aljarida24.com prompted concerns over a probable outbreak of the West African Ebola virus in Morocco.

As a matter of fact, the sources alleged that the Moroccan authorities may have sent some West Saharan natives directly from Airport Mohammed V in Casablanca to the Moulay Youssef hospital after suspecting their contamination with the virus.

The Moroccan authorities denied this right away.

Mr.Abdelghani Drhimeur, Ministry of health’s spokesman, said that “no infection case with the Ebola virus has been detected, whether within Morocco or in any of its airports,” as relayed by aufaitmaroc.ma.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

It will come across our southern border any day now.

I am terrified of that Ebola virus, and I am sure that I am not alone in this opinion. Whether true or false, this story will be bad for the Moroccan tourist industry.

May not be good for the Marrakesh Express.

Here’s the deal....if this makes it to Morocco....there’s at least a thousand German tourists per week who vacation there on the ‘cheap’. All it takes is for one of them to get into contact with someone....drag the virus back to the Frankfurt airport, and infect a dozen folks on the flight back, and another fifty at the airport. Within a week...you’ve got a thousand Germans with the deadly virus.

As long as it stayed in rural areas of Africa...we were all safe. Once it gets to an urban area where aircraft fly frequently out of....it’s a bad deal.

What you really have to worry about is some purveyor of jihad thinking this is better than a bomb vest and deciding to go with it and not seeking medical attention as they begin to present symptoms.

It will come across our southern border any day now.

I'm not worried. We funded the Mexican Border Fence years ago.

The good thing is that Ebola is transmitted through contact with contaminated bodily fluids. There is little chance of catching it by being in the same room as an infected person (unless you contact their fluids).

Ebola has been known to survive in some body fluids for several weeks after infection. I read of a man who gave his wife Ebola 6 weeks after he recovered. I do not know if she survived.

The Ebola Reston strain is the only strain suspected of transmitting through aerosols. Luckily for us, it only affects non-human primates.

I am terrified of that Ebola virus, and I am sure that I am not alone in this opinion.

I read that it varies from around 40%-90% mortality, depending on the type and circumstances.

I find those numbers very concerning, too.

Thankfully, and hopefully, it tends to seem to be self-limiting. The highest number of known deaths from any outbreak was 280 in 1976.

Whether true or false, this story will be bad for the Moroccan tourist industry.

If it is true, I hope so. There are other places to vacation.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ebola_outbreaks for a list of previous outbreaks.

There is at least one similar virus in the United States. The Hantavirus in the western US usually presents as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. It has a 38% mortality rate. I live where it exists, and am very careful when I clean anywhere a mouse may have been, since mice are how it spreads.
