Anti-Kremlin protest draws thousands in Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) — More than 10,000 people turned out in Moscow on Sunday for an anti-Kremlin rally to denounce Russian state television's news coverage, particularly of the crisis in neighboring Ukraine.

In promoting the Kremlin line, state television has portrayed the new pro-Western government in Ukraine as a "fascist junta" under the control of the U.S. government and determined to oppress Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine. The broadcasts have taken on a harsh anti-American tone.

Some of those who took part in the demonstration, called a "March of Truth," carried blue and yellow Ukrainian flags. One woman, wearing a traditional Ukrainian wreath of flowers on her head, held up a sign with President Vladimir Putin's picture and the words: "Stop lying."

Among those who spoke to the crowd was Andrei Zubov, a history professor who was fired from one of Moscow's most prestigious universities last month after criticizing Russia's military intervention in Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula. Zubov argued against the annexation of Crimea by comparing it with Nazi Germany's annexation of Austria on the eve of World War II.

Zubov told the crowd that by lying to the Russian people on television, the government was leading the country toward "an abyss."

The U.S. and Ukrainian governments have accused Russia of orchestrating the unrest in eastern Ukraine in an effort to split the country. Russia has denied any involvement.

The USA has engineered what?

Obama is throwing a tantrum and has almost nothing else.

I applaud the Russians who want the truth to be told.

What about us? This is a AP article, and they've been towing the Obama line on this since the beginning, so who even knows if it's credible.

I wish them success. It will be an interesting test of the robustness of the country if they don’t get the Mafia treatment. If Putin wants somebody poisoned he can do it.

Ten thousand is a lot of people to disappear. Putin has always faced opposition. It looks like the cat’s out of the bag with demonstrations of that magnitude. The smaller numbers previously were easy to arrest. Add the debacle with the Chinese and Putin ain’t so highfalutin anymore.

His acknowledgment of financial issues underscores the fact the man has problems.

If I were nefarious I might dream of a scheme of virusing them with a drone or something like that. But who knows.

Ukraine, meanwhile, is getting very serious about the Lord. Russia remains riddled with the occult. In the long term, the more God faithful side is poised to win.

I’ve been asking that question for a long time. They are the fifth column in this country in my opinion.

Putin is trying to push that Obama is behind the Ukraine thing? He is trying to say Obama has balls? Step aside Colbert, I think we have Letterman’s replacement.

The Russians are still politically retarded.

Think of Putin as John Gotti,

He is in charge of the most powerful crime family in Russia.

As the population seeks more freedom and is influenced by the best and worst of western civilization, he plays a reactionary and simplistic game in response to challenges, and uses deadly force or sends goons to intimidate his opposition.

He's KGB and dictator for life.

Until we have effective leadership he will have his way with us.

I suspect that the CIA is now calling the shots in Ukraine.

The current POTUS is basically on vacation until 1/20/17.

This is what Putin is really afraid of, his own citizens. He’s afraid he’ll be held accountable. How did he get to be one of the richest men in the world with $75 billion? He fears a Maidan in Moscow.

I agree with you that much of the media is pro-Obama biased in the US, but it is not state-owned, like in Russia. The bias here is a voluntary one based on shared liberal values. I don’t like it, but it’s not the same as one that’s based on coercion.

A distinction without a difference... in results.

It may be the case that in the US, the liberal politicians are “owned” by the media and the elites that run it.

Putin’s intervention in Ukraine is like walk in the park. No real resistance. When it is the case on the ground, would 10,000 protesters scare Putin?

No, it's a real distinction. If a consensus exists among the US population or the news media, and that consensus is freely arrived at, it's not the same as a top down driven news reporting. Most of the US news media was against Hitler. Were they only against him because they were forced to be so or did they share a common belief that NAZISM was a moral evil? I think we both know the answer.

Also, we do have opposing views in the US media. FOX NEWS is hated by liberals because it's not pro-Obama. That ought to count for something. Likewise, with print journalism we have many opposition outlets. If you're unaware of them and truly don't know this, I'll come back to the thread and name them. Just ask me.

As for Russia, Putin's got the market nearly totalitarian tight.

Actually, I take this as a good sign. Putin better tread carefully. The worm can always turn.

AP has a photo in the link. I think this could be true and I sense it is as I know a lot of Russians who remember Gorbachov and his lies regarding Chernobyl and other things.

So it it’s true it could be a real good development for Europe where people are in a panic over seeing Putin’s A-Hole behavior come out in the open.
