Bush Urges Effort to Close Black and White Students’ Achievement Gap
New York Times ^ | April 10, 2014 | Peter Baker

AUSTIN, Tex. — Former President George W. Bush called the achievement gap between white and black children “a national scandal” on Thursday and urged both parties to come together to address it as the central civil rights issue of the modern era.

Paying tribute to President Lyndon B. Johnson at a conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, Mr. Bush said the real test of the nation’s commitment to equality would be to fix an educational system that has tolerated low standards for too long.

“There’s a growing temptation among public officials in both political parties at the federal, state and local levels to lower expectations,” he told an audience. “Without meaningful accountability, it is poor and minority children who suffer most. The goal of ending achievement gaps should unite Republicans and Democrats, it should unite teachers and parents.” He added, “It is only right to blow the whistle on mediocrity.”

Mr. Bush’s speech concluded the three-day conference hosted by the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library, where three other presidents also commemorated the landmark antidiscrimination law of the Johnson era. Mr. Bush reached across the aisle to hail Johnson’s domestic achievements, including his commitment to education, and noted that he signed a law naming the Department of Education for him.

“Lyndon Johnson was continuing the work of Abraham Lincoln, which is really the work of the Declaration of Independence — ‘All men are created equal,’ ” Mr. Bush said. “He made us one people. I’ve got great respect for the way President Johnson used the presidency to achieve big goals. He understood the risks to his party and the risks to his coalition.”

The University of Texas already tried this. The rejected top scoring whites in some programs to take second and third tier, while taking highest scoring favored minorities. It still didn’t work.

Go back to painting lapdogs. At least that is a real person’s work.

This is the inane conclusion one arrives at when you start with the wrong assumption.

He didn’t learn anything from NCLB?

Everything is always going to be better for the rich. Money is not tiny worthless stones. It is what we use to get to better starts for our children. DUH.

But poor and all minorities, even special needs kids, with two married parents who spend quantity and quality time with them and focus on educatin will get the most our of their child’s education. If the school sucks, they can homeschool or go get him into a private school on scholarship. Clean living people of all incomes can make it happen for their kids.

Oh, and Bush? The married clean living families of all incomes do fairly similar, advantage of course going to the rich. The kids with bad educations are the families who don’t live decent family life. You don’t need 20th century school “facts into heads” education as much any more.

Shut your pie hole bush. You were a failure as a president and are the reason we got two terms of the ghetto con artists currently residing in the white house.

You're also the reason I left the repugnant party and am now claim the Constitution Party.

LOL!!! Yeah those Bushs love them, “Religion of Peace”, muzzies huh? (Almost as much as they love their criminal illegal alien invading pals from Mexico)! Still hard to believe how many are not paying attention to the true and ‘no secret now’ agenda of these NWO Globalists Bushs.

Yep, urban black culture is one item, and then there's the black leg spreaders and sperm donors of this country who make the babies and move on, while mama cries “single mother” and cashes in on the fee govt goodies, while doing her thing, which doesn't include providing for and educating those babies she pops out. I'm sick and tired of these losers who perpetuate this lifestyle generation after generation because they WANT TO...it's easy money and you don't have to work to earn it. Here's a news flash: black people, clean up your act and your culture. You refuse to assimilate with the culture of this country, and so you sow what you reap. You're your own worst enemy. You'll get o money or sympathy from me. You know what you have to do, so do it.

I guess George really is Stupid... totally unaware of the problems in the black community.. or does not care..

No fathers in households and drugs of all types rampant there..
And being mostly democrats or worse what would one expect..
Not that a large percentage white students are that much better..

Not that most schools teach much anyway.... anymore..
No civics or history in most places.. and little decent math..

The teachers unions have dumbed America down greatly.. ON PURPOSE..
And the other unions are just a scam..

You can lead a horse to water and you can put a kid in school (or what they call “school” these days), but you can’t make either of them partake of what’s offered.

You have it all wrong. The achievement gap will be closed by lowering standards for whites and Asians.

Kind of trickle up like.

Blacks will do as well or better than whites once most black students learn to sit still, be quiet, pay attention, show respect to the teachers, follow rules, do homework and study for exams.

The only way to close the Black and White student gap is to get parents involved and interested in their children’s education. That’s true for a whole lot of White students as well. But I don’t know how you turn bad parents into good ones.

George,,stay retired and paint.

Your comments are completely inane.

Your suck up to Lyndon Johnson, one of the most detestable and corrupt human beings to ever grace the White House is despicable.

This is the man who understood the import of the Civil RIghts
Act when he said upon its passage about having the “ni@@ers” in the Dems pocket for the next fifty years.

You,your father and your brother are the most tone deaf people I know, and you continually prove it.

Somehow, you and your family are blind to who and what Clinton and Obama truly are.

We will be unwinding the damage all three of you have caused for decades to come.
