Democrats embrace adding photos to Social Security cards By Juliet Eilperin and Karen Tumulty, Published: April 10

As Republicans push for new voting restrictions around the country, a handful of Democrats have coalesced around an impromptu idea: placing a photo on Social Security cards.

Former U.N. ambassador and civil rights activist Andrew Young — who chairs a nonpartisan voting rights group called Why Tuesday? — buttonholed President Obama and two of his predecessors in Texas this week in an effort to win their support for the concept. Former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter endorsed the idea, while the White House declined to comment.

“It’s just an idea whose time may have come,” said Young, a former Atlanta mayor who was in Austin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act at the Lyndon B. Johnson presidential library. “What we’re saying is, everybody’s got a Social Security card. But with all of this identity theft going on, it’s a good idea to have your picture on it.”

The proposal drew praise from some election experts but also prompted immediate concerns on both sides of the political spectrum — highlighting the controversy that still surrounds voting rights issues.

Some voter advocates said requiring such cards could still put poorer Americans at a disadvantage, while conservatives such as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) argued that it could pave the way for a new form of national ID.

“This is a really bad idea,” Paul said in a statement. “The Social Security card is only supposed to be used for Social Security benefits. This idea would make it easy for the federal government to convert the Social Security card into a national identification card.”

How often do I need to have a new photo affixed to my ss card? Where do I go to have new photo affixed to my ss card? How much is this going to cost me for a new photo to be affixed to my card? The money paid for a new photo and card, who receives the money? Where will the money collected from this requirement be spent or will the money go into the general fund for government expenditures? ... The article does not say.

A little rant Sub-Driver and was not directed at you.

I have files upon files of fake IDs that contain photographs of the same person with different names, dates of birth, and driver’s license numbers or ID. The illegals know where to get fake IDs to collect multiple welfare checks. What makes them think they won’t do the same with social security cards? I hate to say it but the only way I can see that the photo could be tied with any degree of accuracy to an ID would be through biometrics and even then there are many very similar looking people on earth that are unrelated that could pass for twins.

I've been a poll watcher for years in PA and have seen the voter fraud first hand and I'm in favor of Voter ID cards, BUT, if you can vote via mail, nothing prevents that kind of massive voter fraud.

I believe that there should be ONE DAY for voting, and if you can't be there in person, you lose, with the exception of military persons voting via absentee ballots.

This will never happen because too many demonRATs know that mail voting almost guarantees them a winning spot on the ticket.

Voters from old age homes should be verified for competence as too many ballots are filed by Nurse Rachett, and the "voter" hasn't got a clue as to what they signed.

> FDR swore on a stack of Bibles to the skeptical American people that the social security number was NOT an id number. Suckers!

Well he lied. Its the most common form of peronal identification used now.

Think of all the new federal jobs this would create. Probably would need thousands of new employees to implement and manage this endeavor.

Do these idiots realize how many millions would have to get a photo made. Look at the inconvenience or is that all our government is now, just plain stupid. Can you imagine what a newly born baby would have for the id picture? And as we grow older the picture would have to be retaken and new cards issued. Can't we just ask the government to go to damn asleep and just get off our backs???????

Way more worried about that than about illegal aliens voting.

No, acceptable voter IDs should be issued by the states and the SS card should not be used for voter ID. SS cards are one of the most forged documents in the US and it would be no different with a photo added.

And the acceptable state issued photo IDs already exist and would not become a national ID card.

So now Democrats are favoring a photo ID for voting? Who cares what ID card it’s on.

Don’t worry, you will need to pay for the new photos. And you will need to pay for the ones to be used by all of the “poor” people, too. And everyone will have to have these, but if they are too much trouble for minorities and the elderly to go get them, we will have teams of federal employees who will go to them, to take their pictures. No problem.

(Sorry, nothing personal. I am just ranting about the stupidity of the idea, and the hypocrisy of the dems to think this is a good idea, but that it is too much trouble for people to have to get and use photo IDs for voting.)

Social Security numbers are issued to infants or very young children, would that be the picture carried on their card throughout their entire lives?

A DNA biometric would be a more successful inclusion, totally personalizing the Social Security card for just about everybody, except maybe identical twins or possibly cloned entities. But that may be a battle for another generation in the future.

This is an absolute non starter. Photo ID’s at the state level is OK but a National ID card? No way. Soon it will be, “Your papers please”? Better yet how about contributing to the New World Order (Read United Nations) Mark of the Beast! I will non comply. You can’t vote you say? Who cares. I am getting tired of voting for the crime family.

When I got my Social Security Card it had printed on it that it was NOT an identification card. Guess all of that has changed.

Adding a photograph to the Social Security Card might, and I say that with a very large grain of salt, prevent fraudulent cards from circulating. But then again, how many secure credit cards have been compromised lately?

“This is a really bad idea,” Paul said in a statement. “The Social Security card is only supposed to be used for Social Security benefits. This idea would make it easy for the federal government to convert the Social Security card into a national identification card.” That boat sailed a long time ago...

BUT, BUT, FDR promised it wouldn't be used for ID purposes.

guess if you like your ID you can keep your ID....another failed promise.
