That’s the ticket! Dig up Richard Basehart, Irwin Allen, and Jules Verne. Ask for a beer summit at the WH, then spring it on Barry: “We’re here for the black box.”
He’s afraid of zombie submariners and sci-fi writers, so he’ll cough it up and we can put this sordid chapter behind us.

Send down an ROV with claws to rip it out of the tail fuselage.

SAA Flight 295 CVR was recovered from 16,100 deep after more than a year. This was in 1989. It still had useable data.

They’re pretty sure they got it this time. They picked up the voice of Herve Villechaize (you know, Tattoo) saying, “Ze plane, Boss! Ze plane!”

No they don’t disengage themselves and float to the surface. Anyone interested in facts could Google “flight data recorder mount” they are designed to slide into a rack and are secured by two threaded caps that screw down over fingers at the lower front face corners of the FDR and CVR. Just like most all other rack mounted avionics components in Boeing aircraft and Airbus too.

If the plane is relatively intact, how does a remote sub get a black box out?

Especially at 18,000 feet deep

If the box is black it might be invisible to news critters like Obama is...

The flight data recorder was not recovered. The voice data recorder was recovered along with significant parts of the wreckage. More of the wreckage could have been recovered, but were not because the expense was exceeding the budget.

I am following this at two commercial pilots forums, airliners.net and PPRuNe.org.

Abbott's comments in Peking were appropriate and diplomatically sensitive to Chinese concerns.

The comments of these forums turned political when an American pilot called Abbott a "clown" and said his comments were political grandstanding. I expected the Aussie contingent to jump on him. Instead, they agreed with him and piled on Abbott ... unfairly, of course.

What's happened to Australians? Do you let an foreigner call your PM a clown, even if you're a Labour supporter? Also, CNN was doing this more subtly an hour ago in their fit of pique when the rumour, unconnected to Abbott, turned out to be untrue. The Australian who stuck up for Abbott was dissed.

This behavior must drive you around the bend. What strikes me is the lack of backbone.

Unless the boxes have changed in the last few years they are actually wire recordings.

I believe they are all solid state now. This is certainly the case on that airplane:

According to the article on EDN, “A solid state flight data recorder (SSFDR) can store up to 25 hours of flight data. The main components of an SSFDR are an interface and controller board (ICB), power supply, crash survivable memory unit (CSMU) and an optional under water locator beacon (ULB).”

The advantage of solid state storage is simple: no moving parts, and no serviceable parts inside (except the battery, which is in a separate compartment.) Here is a better link. The design looks old school to me... but it works.

On March 19, Abbott said with “reasonable certainty” that the plane had been found.

If the black box always survives all these crashes why don’t they make the entire plane out of the black box!

Yes, I said CVR.

It had been very deep for 14 months and was still okay. And it was an older model.

Had the FDR been recovered, it likely would have been okay as well.

If we could recover that back then, we can recover 9M-MRO today.

Boeing cannot afford to have this mystery.

If the recorders are found and recovered, and do not solve the mystery, they will have to try to recover some wreckage.

Assuming they can locate it, of course.
