Nevada Governor Slams Feds in 'New Ruby Ridge' Battle

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval on Tuesday blasted the Bureau of Land Management for its "offensive" conduct in a bitter dispute with a farmer whose cattle graze on federal land — including the bureau’s designation of a "First Amendment area" where people can protest.

In a scalding statement, Sandoval jumped squarely into the middle of a 20-year-old feud between farmer Cliven Bundy and the BLM — focusing his wrath specifically on a penned-in area that the federal agency considers the only place where people can speak freely.

"Most disturbing to me is the BLM's establishment of a 'First Amendment area' that tramples upon Nevadans' fundamental rights under the U.S. Constitution," Sandoval said.

"To that end, I have advised the BLM that such conduct is offensive to me and countless others and that the 'First Amendment area' should be dismantled immediately.

"No cow justifies the atmosphere of intimidation which currently exists nor the limitation of constitutional rights that are sacred to all Nevadans. The BLM needs to reconsider its approach to this matter and act accordingly," Sandoval said.

The scolding comes in the wake of an eruption over the weekend of the long-simmering feud, in which Bundy's cattle were rounded up and his son arrested, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported.

"My ancestors created the rights to that land one hundred and some odd years ago," Bundy’s daughter Bailey Logue told the LA Times. "And we’re not giving them up."

I’m thinking 200+ Nevada state troopers should be on the way to that ranch to tell the feds to stand down.

I agree with you. The governor should order them out of his state...especially shooters, snipers, swat teams, or anything even remotely approaching offensive fire capability.

See #23

I don’t think it should be national guard....they can be nationalized an taken away from him.

It should be state troopers.

I learned a valuable lesson when I was a young boy.

There is only one way to deal with a bully.

We had best get to dealing.

Reid will put his finger to the wind on this one and see which way it’s blowing.

Gov Sandoval could really help his own cause by asserting his authority over this mess.

Here’s hoping he steps in.

My “first amendment area” starts with the black sand at Long Beach, WA., extends down to the shore of Seal Beach, CA., to the ocean’s edge at Melbourne, FL., to the top of Cape Cod, MA., and all parts in-between.

The federal government is NOT the ‘dispenser of rights du-jour’, nor are they the one that can revoke that right.

We are in absolute total agreement on this one, Pollster!

Even the Klan has free speech rights that are granted by God and guaranteed by the First Amendment - and protected by the ACLU and the courts. The same is true for decent people who disagree with actions taken by the thugocracy, those acting on a (true) belief that dissent is patriotic, and even Obama voters. If people as treasonous and evil as Obama voters are free not just to speak the words of their choice but to do so in the public location of their choice, how can anyone who claims to support freedom argue that these ranchers should be restricted on where they can exercise their rights?

The BLM IS the government, and we can speak freely to them anytime, anyplace, any subject.

But we must realize that when we do so, there may be consequences. Is it 1776 yet?

I know.

We don’t have any state or local governments anymore.

Many freepers used to say that when push comes to shove, the military and police will not follow orders.

I am sure they will follow orders from the ones who pay them.

If the feds can block an area, so can state.

Only in a solid red state is that likely to happen. In blue states the state will be backing up the feds.
