Star Trek actress Kate Mulgrew denies willing involvement in geocentrism documentary
National Post ^ | April 9, 2014 | Staff

As Star Trek: Voyager Captain Kathryn Janeway, Kate Mulgrew knew her way around a solar system or two. So there was a certain irony to the actress’ voiceover work in the upcoming documentary The Principle, which focuses on the notion of geocentrism: the idea that the sun revolves around the Earth.

But Mulgrew has dispelled the notion that she buys into the documentary’s central premise, writing in a post on her Facebook page that she is “not a geocentrist, nor am I in any way a proponent of geocentrism.”

“I was a voice for hire, and a misinformed one, at that,” Mulgrew clarifies in the post about her involvement with the documentary, directed by Catholic author and theologian Robert Sungenis. “I apologize for any confusion that my voice on this trailer may have caused.”

Kinda like flat earth theory.

I wonder how many people ever actually believed in a flat earth? If you stand on the beach, you can see the curve of the earth. If you stand on the same beach, or on a plain, you can see ships/people/wagons/whatever making their way up from the horizon.

People seem to have the idea that generations before ours were stone cold stupid, and of course, they weren't.

I’ve been a “voice for hire.” I always called it “prostituting my voice,” and I never much cared what they did with the work product because they paid for it. If I didn’t like what they wanted me to say, they got somebody else and payed them instead. That’s what professionals do.

In her case, they got her to do the voice work because of her earlier work and presumed fame. Meh. I noticed the “Captains” of all the Star Trek shows did voice-over work later in life. I still hear Patrick Stewart on commercials a lot, he has a distinctive voice.

Didn’t know she was on that show. I have Netflix, but have not watched it. If that is the case, I have no idea why she is doing it.

The Earth IS flat, and the sun DOES revolve around the Earth. And holding the Earth up, is a turtle. Under that, is another turtle. And so on.

Anyone who believes otherwise is just plain weird.

I’ve been a “voice for hire.” I always called it “prostituting my voice,”

A friend of mine who used to do radio "prostituted" her voice for a rather humiliating ad for a hemorrhoid treatment center.

I told her "I sure hope you were very well-paid for that one!" She assures me she was.

A solar-centric model has nothing to do with reality either, because the Sun is not the center of the universe either.

Either model works, though one is more general than the other.

Godel's incompleteness theorem tells us that no model can possibly reflect reality perfectly.

All models are imperfect.

Her last job didn't go so well in the delta quadrant....

I heard she got to admiral by Hacking Picards account at Starfleet by transferring all promotions to picard to her file.

She did this before she got stranded and this is why in the last TNG she was an Admiral and picard was still captain...

I guess Starfleet has an Affirmative Action Program even in the year 2370. Picard got screwed for that promotion. :)

The way we used to say it when I was going to Carnegie Mellon was "all models are wrong; some models are useful".

I just use different body parts than other gigolos.

Nothing at all wrong with a good-paying gig or whatever. But fingers were not the body parts I was referencing.

Picard got screwed for that promotion. :)

Nah, you don't promote someone who locked horns with command as often as Picard did. (Plus, you know the whole situation with his chief medical officer had to leave a black mark on his fitness report.)

Kirk got to be Admiral because it was a different era that called for cowboy diplomacy. Besides, it was either that or shoot him, and Starfleet didn't have the stomach for the latter.
