Obama aunt who stayed in US illegally dies at 61

President Barack Obama’s aunt Zeituni Onyango, who was denied asylum in the United States but stayed illegally for years, died Tuesday at age 61.

Onyango, whose immigration status was reported by The Associated Press days before Obama’s election in 2008, had been treated in recent months for cancer and respiratory problems, Cleveland attorney Margaret Wong said. She died in a Boston rehabilitation center, said Wong, who represented her in her immigration case.

Onyango, a half-sister of Obama’s late father, moved from Kenya to the U.S. in 2000 and was denied asylum by an immigration judge in 2004. She remained in the country illegally, living in Boston public housing.

She finally was granted asylum in 2010 by a judge who said she could be in danger if she returned to Kenya because of her relationship with Obama.

I was wondering what she knew. So the doc says she was sick for a long time. I wonder what her illness was and if she died of it or something else.

Principal Dye introduced Auntie Zeituni Onyango’s Assistant Dr. John Richams, who stated Auntie Zeituni wrote her book “Tears of ABUSE,” but now she has Tears of Joy and Tears of Triumph. He was pleased to say that Auntie spoke to Barack Obama before he ran for President and was able to give him encouragement.

Auntie Zeituni Onyango stood up and said, “I would like to thank Allah. I thank my Assistant Dr. John Richams and I would like to thank also Dr. Jon Yasin who introduced me to Sis. Shirley Sharifa Dye.”

She said, “My father was born a Christian and became a Muslim. My brother Dr. Barack H. Obama Sr. was a Muslim.” She said it took 10 years to write her book, living in a shelter and for a time under quarantine.

An Eemotional Auntie Zeitunni stated, “I hid [the abuse]. I carried a scar. In other words, this is not what you want to happen to your child, to any child. Talk to your children, listen to them closely. Watch their reactions to certain people, but above all talk to them, educate them.”

She shared about Kenyan family life and how it is structured, giving a better understanding of how Africans are taught to look out for each other.
