Paula Deen shuts down restaurant without telling employees
FreakoutNation ^ | April 4, 2014 | Anomaly

Paul Deen and her ridiculously pathetic brother Bubba Hier shuttered ‘Uncle Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House’ and included in employees’ severance checks, which were collected in the parking lot, was a message, “Thank you for 10 great years. Uncle Bubba’s is now closed.”

So far so good, except employees that stood in the parking lot of the business that was the center of Deen’s racism scandal in 2013, were unaware the business was closing until they were greeted with that message of gratitude for their dedicated work.

If it was such a terrible place to work why were they still there and why were there any employees to axe?
They received severance and their time worked> She did not sign them on for life!
Work for someone gone BK no ck no nothing.
They should be happy with what they received.

My stepson got fired for being late one day (he was a waiter). His ‘manager’ was not professional, and reveled in the firing.

The very next day - doors are chained shut.

Not even the manager knew what was about to happen.

(usually when a place closes, the 5 second clip on the news will show the chained doors - since the managers have door keys.)

in my view there was a calamitous financial problem perhaps trouble with the IRS or health authorities or pending law suit precipitating the closing

Kinda makes me skeptical of what I might be eating, if the owner doesn’t trust the employees.

No, she didn't want the press coming in with a 2 week notice and making a spectacle of the closing as to the how's and why's. She didn't want an employee loosing it breaking a ton of dishes that can be resold as part of the "asset" as it is put on the block, or robbing the till even more blind if they already have, etc etc etc a bazillion reasons why not to let the fox in the hen-house.

Just like in Tech or Engineering, they day you can't log in is the day you are being walked out the door, so you can't mess with the company assets, plain and simple....

Agreed. The author is at best naive.

And I thank you for not calling the spelling/grammar police out on me. Crickey! did I really type "the other of this piece"? Seriously there has been a real disconnect between my brain and fingers lately, I am a tad concerned.

i cannot stand her... but she is Southern and very popular with many Freepers, regardless of her being liberal... but let someone out of Hollywood behave the same way, hold the same beliefs, make donations to Obama—we will not stand for it!

You know what? I don’t give a damn about American workers at all. Unionized, Spoiled, coddled, expect to be paid when not working, etc. Don’t question my patriotism. My love of country is not tied to supporting any body of workers.

Yeah....

Though it sucks that there couldn’t be any advanced notice, in this HIGHLY litigious society in which we live, often times it may be best for employees to be fired before they know it. That should also go both ways as well. Just as an employer may have the right to terminate without notice, employees should be able to leave without notice, without consequences.

You’re right she doesn’t have a lot of class, or any.

She’s learned the hard way.

Its not that I have sympathy for her, I just don’t get all worked up about it because I’ve been on the receiving end too many times.

Actually, just going by what I read here. I never heard of her before this business hit. I stand corrected.

If you get all your employees, especially food service and public contact employees pi$$ed off they could do substantial damage to your business

And that's precisely why it was done that way. As Penny, the Cheesecake Factory waitress on The Big Bang Theory said: "Don't pi$$ off the people who handle your food."

I am with you on that one. She has given me so many good recipes through the years, and it was a pleasure to watch her in her beautiful kitchen cook with love and joy. I’ve been to her restaurant in Savannah and it keeps that section of town alive. If they don’t support her, then there goes the neighborhood.

I wish her peace in the days and years going forward.

If you made any errors, I didn’t notice them. In fact, I thought your post was excellent.
