Jimmy Fallon’s high ratings pushed David Letterman to retire, source says

LOS ANGELES – David Letterman, 66, rattled the entertainment industry on Thursday when it was revealed that after more than 32 years and almost 6,000 episodes in the late-night arena, he will retire in 2015 when his CBS contract expires. According to a source closely connected to the “Late Show” host, newly appointed “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon – his direct competition – inadvertently gave Letterman the final nudge.

“David is older now; he had heart surgery some time ago and sees both Jimmy Kimmel [of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”] as well as the more formidable Jimmy Fallon now gaining on him…” the insider told FOX411. “Fallon is getting record ratings so Letterman will segue out while he’s still on top. It’s dignified. If Fallon weren’t so hot, he might have stuck around longer.”

Probably the only time we will ever see the word "formidable" used in association with Jimmy Fallon. Frankly...I've seen inebriated homeless street performers with more talent.

I agree. It is simple demographics, the older stupid crowd goes to bed earlier and the idiot hipsters are the ones watching tv now and Letterman is a doofus.

Jimmy Fallon now gaining on him…

That’s like saying the Roadrunner is gaining on Wile E Coyote.

Used to love Letterman. Went to see his show in person. Then about three years ago he started making fun of gentle conservatives like me. He became an a-hole. Now despite my gentleness, I hate him.

Why kind of ratings does Conan get?

I can see him going to CBS...TBS and CBS have been cooperating with a multi-year deal to share the NCAA broadcasts..so there could be the basis for working something out..

Letterman was a doofus even back when I was an idiot hipster. Through the years he’s gotten even less funny and mean-spirited to boot. I have not watched his show on purpose in decades.

Good riddance.

He’s been planning this a while. He doesn’t need the money, he’s had heart surgery, and he’s passed Carson’s record as the longest-running talk show host in history. More to the point, he only signed a two year contract last year, and the speculation then was that it would be his last. Carson did the same thing, only signing short term contracts at the end so he could leave when he wanted.

Good. The bitter, miserable old liberal needs to go. I dno’t think I’ve ever found him funny — ever.

Some younger freepers may not know this, but Letterman used to do comedy on his show and he was pretty good at it, before he got bitter and old, and political.

Letterman is a vile, vicious left-wing egotist. I wonder if he and his boyfriend Les Moonves are going to have a divorce party,

I don't like Letterman but watching Fallon crawling around on the floor singing with Billy Joel is NOT my idea of entertainment.

I watched Fallon and Seth Myers several times out of curiosity and IMO, Myers might wear better over the long haul...when he gets the knack of it.

Fallon is too hyper for late night...and his audience full of short attention spans.

Glad I have Netflix.

Exact same here. Loved him, went to see his show when we were in New York. Can't stand the jerk now because he is so one sided.
