Megyn Kelly Won’t Name Ft. Hood Shooter On Her Fox News Show (Video)

Fox News host Megyn Kelly announced Wednesday night that she will not be using the name of the Fort Hood shooter on her show.

“Authorities are identifying the shooter. If you’re interested you can get his name on other shows, like the one that preceded this one and online, but we have decided not to name these mass killers here as a policy here on the ‘Kelly File.’ Too often it is infamy they seek, and we decline to help,” Kelly said at the beginning of her show.

Suspected shooter, Army Spc. Ivan Lopez, allegedly shot and killed three people and injured 16 others before turning the gun on himself Wednesday.

Later on the show Kelly said, “The nationality of the shooter, it sounds Hispanic, Latino, but you can look up his name online if you care to know more.”

Lopez was an Iraq war veteran, who was being evaluated for posttraumatic stress disorder but had not been diagnosed.

"We do know that this soldier had behavioral health and mental health issues and was being treated for that," said Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, head of the Army's III Corps at Fort Hood.

Miley said there is no evidence that the shooting is terror related.

In October, before her show began, Kelly said she would no longer name mass shooting suspects, like the Navy Yard shooter, who was also suspected of having mental illness.

Lopez was an Iraq war veteran, who was being evaluated for posttraumatic stress disorder but had not been diagnosed.

"I think we should all do it. If they want to find out the names of these people who do this, who shoot up places or take themselves out in a blaze of glory, go look it up online if they need to know the names," Kelly said in October.

Sometimes we’re so anxious to do something we don’t think about the reasons we are already doing what we’re doing.

It is no wonder she has gone as far as she has....Megyn shows enormous respect for her bully pulpit...I couldn’t agree with her more...far too often the criminal is given celebrity status from news sources like the Kelly File.

I’ve been trying to decide which news shows to eliminate since I simply don’t have time for all of them. Thanks for making my decision that much easier, megan. By your own admission you’re not worth my time and attention.

I will be acting accordingly. C ya!

GOOD for her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have wondered for years now about WHY those who commit such violence were being given so much attention.

Nobody watches her show to hear her talk anyway. I have no idea what she says, ever.

The mute button makes the show worthwhile however.

This dirtbag spent a few weeks in the desert, was not injured and wanted ptsd disability to get a free ride. They wouldn’t give it to him so he shot up the medical center and then ended it for himself. A real POS. IMHO.

Are you talking about Ivan Lopez or the thousands of black teens accross the country playing the knockout game?

You see, if you agree the media should zip it with regard to the man who shot up Fort Hood yesterday, then you also have no problem with the media ignoring the black on white violence rampant in our country.

I got news for ya. Ignoring those who commit violence is not going to make the problem go away.

One picture shows him wearing a blue cord (Infantry), but yet he was a truck driver.

Something is definitely wrong with that scenario.

Even if he holds a 11B MOS(job), he is not authorized to wear it if he is not in an Infantry slot.

Just my two cents.

If she just went ahead and did this without announcing it and simply referred to the perp as the mass killer I doubt many would notice one way or the other.

Try paying attention for a minute.
She said this at 9 pm EDT, she wasn’t going to give his name out since it wasn’t known at that time what his motive was. If he did this to become famous or what? She wasn’t going to give his name publicity.

Kelly does a disservice to the public by not naming the individual. Pure and simple. She is not submitting a complete report to viewers and if for some reason her show was the only one watched by a viewer, it would be journalistic malpractice to not report all the facts.

“I don’t understand her reasoning....”
******************************************************************

I do, and agree with it so long as it’s not terrorist related and is limited to not mentioning the shooter’s specific name.

I also will add that if people think back to Sandy Hook, the perp was reported as was on the ID he carried. Pics of the perp were plastered all over the media.

It was a screw up, the perp was not the guy on the ID who had his face plastered as the shooter. It was his brother who got a hold of his brothers ID.

I don’t agree or disagree with Kelly here, but I think she was being cautious because the name had just been released a short time earlier. We all know a name gets released and everyone on the internet goes on a search. A lot of times posting the wrong person who may have the same name, but isn’t the guy.

I think many here are misinterpreting the rationale for not naming “the killer.”

We had a local host that had a long time policy never to speak the name of mass killer. Just call them “the killer”.

To the extent that these attacks are often in part a twisted attempt to gain fame -why you you contribute to that individual fame???

You can argue it’s impractical, certainly. However, it is high minded ethically.

Non sequitur.
Are you deliberately misinterpreting what is being said?

You are comparing apples and oranges in several respects.
Mass shooters is the subject here. They do not deserve the fame they get from having their names and pictures plastered on every TV screen 24/7 for weeks on end.
Many mass shooters want the publicity, even if they die in the act.
The fact is, she is reporting on the shooting, not hiding it like the crimes you wish to compare it to.

The name of thugs who participate in the “knockout game” is often not known, so how can the names be withheld?
Yes, the media hides the race of those thugs, but that is not the issue here. She said that the name sounded Hispanic.

I agree with her decision in this case. As for your accusations, it is not becoming to try to paint those who disagree with your viewpoint as somehow advocating media blackouts on certain news stories. It is quite an ugly accusation.
Unfortunately, I see this type of thing too often on FR lately.

Lies by omission are lies.

A reporter who refuses to report the basic Who-What-When-Where (and eventually How & Why) has an agenda to deny you the news.

If you carry that logic out - you end up with a suppression of ALL the facts. First the media witholds the name. Then the motive. Uh-oh, here are some disturbing facts we don’t think the public needs to know, better keep silent here. And oh yeah; no pictures.

It has served Obama's administration well to have their scandals swept under the rug.

Self-identified "journalists" have said that they have been silent on the failings and broken promises of Obamacare because they didn't want to "pile on" (the nation's first black) President.

First reports said that the shooter was “white”.

White hispanic was not a detail they wanted to go into.

Hating white people because they are white is racism too.

I agree with Kelly, why should we glamorize these wacko’s looking for notoriety? All it does is encourage other wacko’s to go out the same way.

Gee, I didn’t have to watch Kelly to know the guys name. It was all over the internet, including pictures. I have to admit to hoping those pics were right this time. As you know, sometimes they are not.

I would wager to say she also knew if the name given out a short time ago was so important, the viewers were smart enough to figure out how to find the name. It was also scrolled below on the screen.
