Prior problem behavior accounts for the racial gap in school suspensions
Journal of Criminal Justice ^ | 2014 | John Paul Wright et al.

Posted on 04/03/2014 5:46:08 AM PDT by reaganaut1

Purpose

A large body of empirical research finds a significant racial gap in the use of exclusionary school discipline with black students punished at rates disproportionate to whites. Furthermore, no variable or set of variables have yet to account for this discrepancy, inviting speculation that this association is caused by racial bias or racial antipathy. We investigate this link and the possibility that differential behavior may play a role.

Methods

Using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class (ECLS-K), the largest sample of school-aged children in the United States, we first replicate the results of prior studies. We then estimate a second model controlling for prior problem behavior.

Results

Replicating prior studies, we first show a clear racial gap between black and white students in suspensions. However, in subsequent analyses the racial gap in suspensions was completely accounted for by a measure of the prior problem behavior of the student – a finding never before reported in the literature.

Conclusions

These findings highlight the importance of early problem behaviors and suggest that the use of suspensions by teachers and administrators may not have been as racially biased as some scholars have argued.

Cited by Heather MacDonald in an NRO article "Discipline Disparities". The Obama administration has been saying school discipline is biased against blacks.

I guess now the Obama [mal]Administration will have to start claiming that the methods the schools use to address the prior problem behavior are biased against blacks...

I have a graduate student who used to be teacher. That is, until he got stabbed by a student while teaching in an inner city high school. The assailant, who was Black, only got a one week suspension. Meantime, the student is still dealing with the medical fallout from that attack.

Why didn’t the student press criminal charges?

Lack of fathers. Poor parenting. Peer pressure to be gangster. Blacks being taught hatred of whites. There are lots of reasons for it.

Whites coming down hard on blacks is NOT one of the reasons.

I started my teaching career just as busing started up in the district. Long-term subbing for one year — K through 8 - convinced me that I would make more money and have less stress if I were streetwalking.

The last straw was a 6th grader I sent to the Principal’s office early in the day. When I visited the Principal after school that day, to announce to him that HE could take that class the following day, as I was never coming back, he said - “That kid you sent to me (one of about 5) - His parents let little girls come over and spend the weekend with him! What can I do in a few hours a day?”

I homeschooled our own kid, and I suspect I’ll help homeschool our granddaughter when she gets of school age. Disruptive behavior, no consequences served, dumbing down, and now Common Core - who needs it?

It’s hard to press charges when the assailant is a minor, and the Prosecutors refuse to charge him as an adult.

The high rate of black criminality is probably rooted in black boys being delivered by white doctors.

Oh! The unspeakable racial trauma - it’s just too much to contemplate.

BS. What are the numbers used in this "empirical research"?
Do the exact same number of whites commit offenses worthy of punishment as blacks? I doubt it. I would speculate, in absence fo real numbers, that more blacks commit offenses worthy of punishment than whites.

Could, uh, this be why "empirical research finds a significant racial gap in the use of exclusionary school discipline with black students punished at rates disproportionate to whites."?

WHAT?!?!?! no variable or set of variables have yet to account for this discrepancy? Really? Why does unrefrigerated milk spoil sooner than refrigerated milk? Is there no variable or set of variables that would account for the obvious difference? Try this; Children growing up in fatherless homes, with little guidance or discipline tend to have less respect for authority, their peers, establishment rules or generally accepted social manners. They, therefore 1) Swear at teachers 2) Fight at school 3) vandalize property....

I'm no expert here. But I'd guess this study started with the results, "Black students are disciplined more because of racism."

They need to be disciplined more because they’re stupid.

The impression I got was that he offered a deal. Apparently there were no witnesses and the school closed ranks around the attacker (go figure). In the end, they offered to pay all his medical expenses if he didn’t make a lot of noise. They are still paying his [extensive] medical bills.

“hatred of whites” is simply a proxy - the left is actually promoting hatred of Western Culture (based on Judeao-Christian morality).

I had three friends/relatives in education but one just left - after 13 years in the classroom - for all the above, and more, stated reasons. Suburbs too. Insane.

The disproportionate number of blacks to whites and asians is probably NOT nearly as BAD as it SHOULD BE...

IT SHOULD BE WORSE.... liberal teachers turn their heads..
and much stuff is ignored..

-OR- blame is transferred to THE VICTIM... probably white but could also be black.. or asian or hispanic..

Affirmative Action has many heads.. like Medusa..

Duh!!!! I love these studies. I have taught in an alternative school in the deep south. I didn’t need a study to tell me this.
Actually you just have to look at what passes for “family” in any races family nowadays.
They all smoke dope together and commit crimes together.
Many live with grandparents whom they control.
