Don’t Mess With Poland: Warsaw’s military may be the only thing standing between Putin and Europe
War is Boring ^ | April 2, 2014 | Robert Beckhusen

Four years ago, Poland was set to become the staging ground for advanced U.S. ballistic missile interceptors. But after the plan collapsed—and seeing defense budgets in the rest of Europe on the decline—Polish political leaders decided they needed their military to fend for itself.

And now with an aggressive Russia bearing down on Ukraine, Warsaw is getting even more worried—and prepared.

I guess the Poles must be Nazis, too. After all, anyone who stands up to Putin is now called a Nazi. TPTB must really want to re-constitute the USSR as a justification for WW3.

Unfortunately, Poland knows what can happen under the hand of totalitarian government. The world will not listen and will not act. Putin can take anything he wants and there will be no response

Poland is also planning to reduce its overseas presence. Warsaw deployed some 2,500 troops to Iraq and also stationed around 1,600 troops in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. This second group of soldiers are now coming home.

And they deserve our support. Every Polish person I've met has been a good one. Almost married one.

July and August 1920, Poland stopped the Soviets advance to take Poland. Had they succeeded, the Bolsheviks would have marched into Germany and Hungary

The fall of the soviet empire bagan at Gdansk. Gdansk is a very important shipping port for Europe and right next to the Russian sliver of Kalalingrad. A simple change of the map would give a spanking to Poland and what better way for Putin to humiliate the once fiercly pro USA ally then to take the city that spawned the Solidarity Movement? I am sure Polish intelligence is monitoring the city for arrival of Russian passports and Russian speaking arrivals. If Obama had his balls from Wookie’s purse he would stage some Naval drills in the region and have the US Navy move a few more warships to ports at Gdansk and Gdynia.

While people might consider it good sport to pick on the Poles for their fighting in World War 2, it is generally misplaced and historically inaccurate.

Poland lasted for 5 fewer days than France did when invaded and they were invaded by both Germany and the USSR. They had a greatly inferior military, with very few tanks and minimal aircraft. France had more tanks than Germany and a comparable airforce.

Yes, the Poles did deploy cavalry, and it was even used to good effect at times. No, it was not used to charge tanks on any regular basis.

Busting on the Poles for their performance in that war shows a lack of respect for a brave people and startling ignorance of history.

why? Because Poland and Moscow have been enemies since 1453.

After Kievan Rus was decimated by the Mongols, a large part came under the sway of Lithuania (once one of the largest countries in Europe) and then Poland from the 15th century. In the meanwhile Moscow was the tax collector for the Mongols and Muscowy became the successor state to the Mongol Empire.

Moscow has tried to crush Poland over the centuries and vice-versa. Poland conquered Moscow in 1610 and was instrumental in Napoleon's capture of Moscow in 1713.

There is a lot of bad blood between the two.

Poland was instrumental in the dismantling of the Tsarist regime and in the collapse of communism.

You read my mind. The Battle of Warsaw 1920 is a very good Polish film on the subject.

Russia also sees Poland as an obstacle to pan-Slavic unity. The Muscowites saw themselves as first gatherers of the Rus, then of all the Orthodox, then of all the Slavs.

Poland didn't agree with that

The Mongols were not stopped by German knights. They were stopped by forests and steppes and by the death of their Khagan — which caused all forces to stop and head back to Mongolia

read about the Battle of Warsaw in 1920 when the Soviets were crushed by the Polish army — this at a time when Western powers didn’t support Poland because Germany and others were on the brink of becoming communist countries on their own

the Mongols invaded Eastern Europe in the 1240’s....

Fast Forward to 1920. The Poles handed the Bolshevik horde a series of stunning defeats to establish modern Poland.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Warsaw_(1920)‎

The modern boundaries of Poland are however, pretty much those agreed upon by Hitler and Stalin in 1939, with some post-war jiggery-pokery.

There are small regions in Poland where ethnic Germans,Russian, Ukrainians, etc. are still dominant. However, with perhaps the exception of the Germans, they have one hell of a better deal than they would have among their ethnic countrymen.
