Mazzoli-Simpson and the Immigration Control Act of 1986.

Before California was a swing state that often elected republicans, afterwards solid blue due to millions of naturalized illegal aliens.

...and here in Maryland?

Similar stories. Not identical though.

I lived there in the 90’s. Republicans weren’t conservatives, the populace was in general liberal and ignorant of consequences and they surrendered to illegal immigration.

That and the weather was too good, hard winters tend to drive the dependent classes away.

Basically, it was destroyed by Bush, Rove, Schwarzenegger, and the guy they forcibly inserted as head of the state Republican party—I forget his name now.

Bill Simon had beaten out Rove’s Rino candidate, 2-1 in the primary, and Rove was furious. He pulled all the money out of Simon’s campaign, and Simon lost by 1 or 2% as a result. He would have been an excellent governor. Instead, the Democrat won. He was recalled by conservatives, but Rove again interfered, and stuffed Arnold down the state GOP’s throats. Arnold was a big spending liberal, and he basically finished the party off.

Yes - voting by mail/ by postcard/ NO signatures or ID required. These are huge problems and ripe for abuse (created to be abused, I believe). I worked a polling place one election. A woman came in, barely literate in her own language, had a HELPER who HELPED her vote - Democratic all the way.

Other states are now requiring Voter ID. It is imperative that only citizens vote. Once.

I wish it were true that there is a large untapped conservative electorate in California just waiting for a group of conservative purists to come in and clean out the whole state but alas...it’s a lost cause.

Prop. 13 killed the GOP.

Everyone is pretty much a hypocrite. Even liberals like tax breaks. Once Prop. 13 was passed no one needed the Republicans for anything. You could open up the borders wide, increase welfare spending, etc. but as long as people were paying low property taxes they thought they were getting a good deal.

Also, now that property taxes are a state mandate, there's very little important to decide on the local level. If there were no Prop. 13, then each city could decide on its own what taxes should be. Republican mayors would presumably keep their property taxes low, become quite popular, and could then run for state office. But now that's off the table.

There is hope for the GOP in that the demands of the Democrats have become so huge that they've had to increase the sales and income tax so high that even liberals are starting to complain. I can see a future for Schwartznegger-type left-leaning, pro-business sorts getting elected in toss-up districts.

The only thing that would see truly conservative Republicans elected would be a major economic or geologic catastrophe.

Pray that Yellowstone blows, but doesn't blow TOO much.

Here in New York - Republicans in the State Assembly and Senate who are willing to play the fake opposition to Democrat majorities (and vote together with them on many other issues) are given plenty of perks - heads of committees, extra pay, sinecures for life, the ability to pass out patronage.

I image the same exists in California.

Those of us who have lived here the past 40 or 50 years know pretty well what destroyed this state.

There have always been nutso liberals here, but somehow the party survived them.

Illegal aliens were the bullet to the state GOP's brain. True they could have gone down with dignity, but they were doomed anyways after the state was flooded with voting legal and former illegal aliens.

California academic academys(universitys) are used primarily for RE-EDUCATION..
to create socialism agents... out of republicans.. and libertarians..

Democrats are already socialist agents..
The federal takeover of education was BRILLIANT...
The very foundation of FREEDOM was penetrated AND DESTROYED..

The slaves no long know they are slaves..
the teachers are merely guide dogs for the BLIND....
Brilliant really..... The russians have perfected this since 1917...

America doesn’t even KNOW they lost the cold war...
The blind leading the blind is no way to win a war.. ANY war..

They did it to themselves. Our Democratic State Senator is terming out and NO Republican candidate filed on time to run for the seat. Think how many Republican clubs and tea party groups and such are around and about in the South Bay area of LA, and NONE of them had a plan and a candidate in mind, even though it is obvious when you are going to need to field somebody because there are term limits. I’ve only been a Republican for a couple of years and I am completely appalled. The Republican women’s group is like: Have a meeting, eat lunch, listen to a speaker, and congratulate yourself for being politically active.

People who have time and money and should be able to do something are acting like there will always be another chance. They are totally missing the seriousness of the situation.

The fish rots from the head...

The head of the GOP, and their chosen leader, did it for many, including me.

After eight years of Bush’s open border free for all, as he literally aided and abetted this epic lawless violent free for all, most ended their relationship with that political club.

LEGAL IMMIGRATION killed the GOP in CA.

38.2% Hispanic; 27.1% foreign-born; 43.5% Language other than English spoken at home, pct age 5+, 2008-2012; and 39.4% White alone, not Hispanic or Latino, percent, 2012

Minorities and immigrants vote more than two to one Democrat. Demography is destiny.
