Hundreds of Jobs Lost as Store Chain Closes Due to ObamaCare and Minimum Wage Hike
Frontpage Mag ^ | 03/30/2014 | Daniel Greenfield

By the time ObamaCare and the minimum wage get done wiping out jobs, everyone will need that basic guaranteed income that libs love talking about.

Citing Obamacare and an increase in the state’s minimum wage, the owner of Waterford-based Yankee One Dollar is closing down shop on all 23 remaining locations.

Its owner Keith Flike blamed the Affordable Care Act and the increase in the state’s minimum wage for the decision to shut down. Each store has six to 10 employees, he told the Post Star.

Those are just more employees who have been liberated from job lock to explore their painting skills, take some time off to write the Great American Novel, stockpile canned food, hustle part time jobs, cope with a car breakdown that they can’t afford to get fixed, go from one social services agency to another to keep their families together.

It’s just Obama making life better for them and for everyone else.

Can’t wait to hear the liberals weigh on this. Probably they will say that this business owner is too greedy, wants to shut down because he won’t make enough profit now.

My impression ,is that liberals just don’t understand how business works, and the need to make a profit to stay in business. A business cannot stay in business long term if they are losing money month after month, year after year.

A business also cannot afford to just absorb increased costs put on them by government, such as mandates for healthcare, minimum wage levels, or any other government regulation. Costs imposes on business have to be paid by someone. That someone ultimately is the customer of the business.

But most businesses can’t just raise their prices 20% if their costs of doing business have jumped 20% due to government regulations.

Entire books have been written on these subjects, so not sure how clear this is in a few paragraphs above. But, I do think that liberals just don’t have any notion of how the business world works, and what it takes to stay in business.

It would be good for politicians, of both parties, to have spent some time in their lives running a business and meeting a payroll, before they get elected to high positions and start telling the rest of us how to live.

As mentioned in related threads, the states have never delegated to Congress, via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate, tax and spend for public healthcare purposes, or the power to establish a national minimum wage. Corrupt, constitutionally-clueless federal lawmakers are unthinkingly promising these things to low-information voters in order to remain in power imo.

A small business with 5 employees would have to pay $2000 more a month.

10 employees...an additional $4000 for the employer to pay out.

These are outrageous costs for many businesses already struggling in a lousy economy.

Meanwhile the obamas spent a minimum $16 million for a Hawaiian vacation. One of 4 so far this year alone.

Judging by the name, these businesses were Dollar Stores. Not much room to raise wages there and how much profit could there be in the first place. Now there will be a couple hundred more people out of work PLUS families who used to shop there to save money will be out of luck. Where I live we have Dollar Tree stores. I am not poor but you better believe I shop there for cleaning supplies, cards, wrapping paper, gift bags, laundry detergent, etc.

Not to worry. All they need to do is let the Dims raise the minimum wage to $10.50/hr. and all will be well.

Dollar stores are hurting. Going in a Dollar store, the merchandise are smaller and some of the name brands are made overseas. I saw Colgate in a Dollar store, it was about 3 oz and made in Pakistan. Not sure about you, but I don’t want things made for my mouth made in a backward country.

This one is not small enough.

He has six to ten employees at 23 stores. That's somewhere between 138 and 230 employees.

A "small" business has fewer than 50 employees.

In the future businesses will either have fewer than 50 or more than 500 employees. In reality it becomes protection from competition for large businesses. The up and coming business will never have a chance.

Don’t know about you, but there is no way toothpaste is going in my mouth, regardless of where it is made, it is poison!

Baking soda is the only way to go.

I didn’t say it was a small business.

I was responding to a claim in post 6, that Obamacare was going to cost small businesses a lot of money.

Of course, Barry might redefine “small business” at any time...

Which also explains the push for amnesty. The libs and RINOs get only their paltry paycheck from taxpayers. They get their millions from corporations.

I didn’t say it was a small business.

I got that.

Like you say, small is whatever Obama says it is.

In my thinking, 100 to 200 employees is small, but is just on the verge of being really successful with maybe more than one or two stores.

These are the businesses that can really boom and create jobs if given the chance and Obamacare is choking the life out of them.

I’ve said even before zero that like Palin, if elected, my first move would be to put both Air Force Ones on Ebay.

Please spare me that a President “needs” all this. Bull! The socialist press can rent their own damn plane and communications can be handled in a MUCH smaller trailing plane.

It’s an extravagance that is ridiculous in this economy and zero abuses the hell out of it waking up every day saying to himself “where can I go today?”

I know a fellow who owns/operates two resturants.
He has 60 employees. He will have to either lay off 11 and run the risk of much lower service to his customers or just close up both of them and cash out and retire.

Hell of a choice he has to make.
