Obama dismisses Russia as ‘regional power’ acting out of weakness

THE HAGUE — President Obama acknowledged Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s annexation of Crimea would be difficult to reverse, but he dismissed Russia as a “regional power” that did not pose a leading security threat to the United States.

Concluding a summit here on nuclear security, Obama also warned that broader Russian military intervention in neighboring countries would trigger further economic sanctions that would disrupt the global economy but hit Russia the hardest.

“Russia is a regional power that is threatening some of its immediate neighbors — not out of strength but out of weakness,” Obama said in response to a reporter’s question about whether his 2012 election opponent, Mitt Romney, was right to characterize Russia as America’s biggest geopolitical foe.

“They don’t pose the number one national security threat to the United States,” Obama said in a news conference. “I continue to be much more concerned when it comes to our security with the prospect of a nuclear weapon going off in Manhattan.”

Defending his response to the Ukraine crisis, Obama dismissed criticism that a perception of weakness abroad had prompted Putin to seize Ukraine’s autonomous Crimea region this month, an act the United States and Europe have called a violation of both Ukrainian and international law. But Obama made clear that no military response is being contemplated, unless Putin pushes into NATO member nations on Russia’s western border.

Mistake to put down Russia as a “weak” “Regional Power” “acting out of weakness” Watch as Putin responds with actions rather than words. Obama has bitten off more than he can chew. Now China will act up, then Russia again, then Europe—Then Brazil—then Iran. We are entering into a new phase—a really bumpy road for the US and her interests.

I have a different take.

Obama plays golf because he knows he can not prevail and is powerless to actually do anything. The stress of being a loser drives him to the golf course where he can lie about his score and stroke his self esteem.

The bathhouse dweller lives in a delusional bubble where reality is whatever he thinks it is. Russia is a regional power because it has a strong man leading it, unlike America. America use to be a superpower until it selected this puny community organizing rump raider to two terms.

You are correct and Obama is correct. Putin is not financially able to project real military power beyond his immediate borders.

Obama is merely acknowledging that which is known but not mentioned. It is impolite. But....Putin made him do it.

Russia is a “regional power” with enough nukes to kill half the population of the United States.

Remember how leftists in government and media had a collective cow when George W. Bush said “bring it on” with respect to Muslim terrorists?

Barack Obama has just said, “bring it on” as a dare to a nuclear arms powerhouse.

Now, that’s something worth being concerned about.

Well, the media always believes him when he says that about Republicans - why shouldn’t it work with Russia? :)

Yeah, like we are, sporting a $17 trillion debt, climbing by $1 Trillion per year, while we dismantle our military.

A “Regional Power” with the world’s largest Nuclear weapons arsenal.

He’s trying to insult Putin.
But Putin knows that he is playing the better hand right now, and likely won’t ever have a better one.

If he isn’t trying to start World War III, then why is he trying to insult Russia? This is pointless bluster, aimed at what? Is he trying to make Putin think he has to demonstrate Russia’s strength by causing more trouble? I don’t see the logic in this at all.
