Russian forces broke through the gate a Ukrainian airbase in Belbek, Crimea and demand the forces inside to surrender.

Interesting post. The kind that makes one think and go “hmmmmm?”
I also agree that Putin wants the return of the Soviet Empire without the communism
Obama and Reggie cannot be bothered. Michelle and fat mama are in China........time for some boy on boy love action.
The Russian zeal for universal empire under Russian rule is a given. For Ukrainians to bury their heads in the sand was imprudent. For them to give the Crimea up without a shot is, frankly, about the most cowardly display ever seen since Edward Benes handed the Sudetenland over to Germany without resistance.
It’s not an accident Ukraine was prostrate militarily. That’s exactly the way Putin wanted it and his man Yanukovych was running the show.
Apparently Ukraine asked for military aid and the kenyan and the EU refused. I doubt they even have enough ordnance on hand to support a sustained engagement against the Russians.
It really wasn’t a hard decision for Ukraine not engage militarily once they realized they would run out of ammo in 7 days or whatever.
It was an equally easy decision for the Afghans to go up against Russian artillery, tanks, helicopter gunships and ground attack aircraft, armed only with 19th century muzzle-loading jezail rifles and WWI-era Lee Enfield bolt action rifles. It wasn't until they showed they were willing to stand and fight by taking serious casualties that foreign sponsors jumped in with significant material assistance.
“The only morons on FR are the moral relativist brain damaged isolationists who cant think more than one move ahead on their checkerboards.”
That is funny. And true.
McCain is such an arrogant asshole and an idiot to boot, so he would never back down from that statement. In fact, I believe his actual response in 2008 was to condescendingly laugh at the question posed by the 50-60 yr old man and to answer with "No, you don't need to be afraid of Barack Obama", as if he were quieting our fears with his gentle, reassuring words!
Like I said, what a gullible & naive asshole that McCain is. (And remember, it was taboo for anyone in McCain's campaign to ever use 0dumb0's middle name "Hussein")
Excellent post. Rational, intelligent and just.
A must-read.
Score card? It’s marked “game cancelled on account of your lights getting punched out if you say anything about there being a game.”
Back to my recurring observation that most people just continue the mundanity of their lives regardless of what their leaders do. Ukraine? Crimea? Russia? W[ho]TF cares who’s in charge? Wave the assigned flag when assigned to, and otherwise continue on with eating, sleeping, and procreating.
The Ukraine leadership had a meltdown; the duly-elected but nonetheless corrupt president & co. fled, a coup was in order, Putin cares not for the western half but does want the eastern half back. Russian flag over Crimean parliament blindsides everyone, and game over. Everybody, Obama included, knows that Putin IS willing to go all-in to win; nobody wants to die for Crimea et al, so it’s a done deal save for a handful of holdouts that need 7.62 millimeters of persuasion.
By the end of Obama’s term, Regan’s legacy will be undone and the USSR reborn without the pretext of “member countries”.
NK can only survive by not attacking SK.
Short version: if NK makes the long-awaited move, Seoul ceases to exist, Pyongyang ceases to exist, and absolutely everything holding NK together comes apart.
...but yes, if NK is going to make that move, now is the best time. Not a “good” time by any means, but the best window of opportunity for a long, long time to come.
I don't think *anyone* has enough. Maybe China, only because they have so many soldiers, or NK. USSR was manufacturing, warehousing and rotating mountains of ammo, shells, rockets, and other weapons. Well packaged, stable ammo in a spam can can be stored for a very long time.
But, most importantly, neither side is willing to shoot and kill to reach their goals. Let's hope it stays this way, even if some base commanders are insistent on "defending" an indefensible position.
Additionally, this is a good example of the Army command missing in action. Often warring sides go to great pains to suppress the enemy's command and control. Here Russians got it for free, without even trying :-)
Here's some photos from Base:..."The End"
Belbeck..... Ukrainian Colonel Yuli saluting his troops at the end ...apparently a moving speach before they left the base
Last salute to his Troops
FYI.......EC Summit in Brussels this week asked to spot vote what should be the response if Russia goes into Eastern ukraine.........here's the result which speaks volumes....they also stated they will Not go to war over Ukraine and the PM of Ukraine has announced this to the people there as well
You are absolutely correct..and is how people should see Putin...and how he sees himself as well.
That's why some have difficulty understanding the World Stage as it is now. Putin's doing nothing more than what the EC/Nato and US is doing (And China)....gathering nations together...shoring up their interests and resources....all to be able to have their "Empires" govern the World.....once each reaches it's critical mass...they'll be a showdown, you can be sure.
As for following International Laws....ignore them all when they start quoting law, for each is making their own rules, and breaking others as they go......but at this juncture Putin achieved his immediate goal.... without shock, without awe...
Putin shakes hands jointly with gov. officials from Sevastopaol and Crimia after signing official documents in the Kremlin...

“Belbeck..... Ukrainian Colonel Yuli saluting his troops at the end”
Ukrainian military troops stationed at Belbek criticized the Maidan-government in Kiev: “We are being abandoned - most sadly by our own government. The most dangerous enemy appeared to be our leadership and our government.
Today I’ve found an interview with Acting Minister of Defense Igor Tenyukh (ultra-right nationalist), where he says he maintains contact with all troops on the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, that all relevant orders were given and the situation is under control. There were only two orders remain in place and ‘you are allowed to use weapons.’ Thats it!
The way Hamid Karzai is acting maybe we should just leave Afghanistan NOW and tell Putin if he wants somewhere to invade and show his true strength, he can finish what the Soviet Union couldn’t 30 years ago. Let’s make the Taliban and Al-Qaeda Russia’s problem. Use some Intelligence and Propaganda to get the ball rolling.
Polish Armed Forces modernized? Are they going to fight back with horses again?
You trying to be funny?
Are you of Polish ancestry?
Yes.
And I’ve stated many times here their contributions to the war effort, long after Germany and Russia carved her up.
It was never a matter of skill. Past presidents have coasted on the basis of an open checkbook backed by the resources of the largest economy in the world. In past crises, the US strategy has been to ask "What number do you want on this check?" Obama has slammed the checkbook shut. His reasons probably have to do with (1) staying away from foreign entanglements that don't benefit him with the Democratic base, but could hurt him with both the base and with independents if things go badly and (2) avoiding expensive operations abroad that make it more difficult for him to bulk up the domestic welfare state. Either way, this cloud has a silver lining - it has put countries that do not have a formal alliance with the US on notice that they should look mainly to themselves if they are invaded. Defense budgets will go up, and a burden will be lifted off Uncle Sam's shoulders. It would be even better if Obama stood aside as the Baltic states (which spend 1.2% of their GDP on defense) were invaded and annexed. It would remind NATO countries that they are ultimately responsible for their own defense, and that the pact is only a piece of paper that cannot automatically command the material and manpower resources of the US.

There's a lot they can do to hurt Russia beyond going to war. Afghanistan was a disaster for Russia without anyone other than Afghans fighting Russian troops.
