According to the laws and Cistoms of War those Russian troops masquerading as unidentified local gunmen were liable to be tried and convicted of violating international law regarding the laws and cusoms of war with respect to wearing uniforms without “a fixed distinctive emblem recognizable at a distance.”

corps fulfilling the following conditions:
1. To be commanded by a person responsible for his subordinates;
2. To have a fixed distinctive emblem recognizable at a distance;

It should also be noted how the rapid and large scale supply of so-called self defense force insignia and Russian style uniforms implies the provisioning of these supplies by the Russian Army had to have been planned and stockpiled for the invasion long before Yanukovych fled the Ukraine to hide from prosecution for his crimes.
