Bart Stupak: I got double-crossed on the contraception mandate
Hotair ^ | 03/13/2014 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 03/13/2014 12:10:00 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Consider this a quick follow-up to my earlier post on the National Journal “primer” on the HHS contraception mandate. A day or so ago, the one man who might have stopped ObamaCare at the final hour now says he got shafted. Bart Stupak had held out for statutory prohibitions on abortion funding through ObamaCare but settled instead for an ambiguous executive order — and saw his political career crash to an end. Now he’s unhappy because his fellow Democrats promised him they’d respect conscience objections:

Today, as a private citizen, I’m proud to stand with the Green and Hahn families and their corporations, Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood, in seeking to uphold our most cherished beliefs that we, as American citizens, should not be required to relinquish our conscience and moral convictions in order to implement the Affordable Care Act. …

[W]e received an ironclad commitment that our conscience would remain free and our principles would be honored. With our negotiations completed and our legislative intent established by the colloquy, we agreed to an executive order directing federal agencies to respect America’s longstanding prohibitions on government funding of abortion and most relevant here, to respect longstanding protections for individuals and organizations conscientiously opposed to participating in or facilitating abortions.

I was deeply concerned and objected to the HHS mandate that required all health plans to cover all FDA-approved contraceptives, including four drugs and devices that could terminate human life at its earliest stages by preventing an embryo’s implantation in the womb. The FDA’s own labeling statements, as well as other studies, indicate that drugs such as the 5-day-after pill (Ella), as well as intrauterine devices (IUDs), may operate this way. The Greens and the Hahns cannot, in good conscience, risk subsidizing actions that may take human life.

Democrats from Obama on down promised that people could keep their current plans, keep their preferred doctors, pay lower premiums, and have a website that works. Sorry to see former Rep. Stupak shocked, shocked about being betrayed, but that’s the way most of us felt about Rep. Stupak when he caved on his principles in the first place.

Also, how long does Stupak expect that EO to remain in effect after this? Just asking…

Bart Stupak believed what he wanted to believe. He had been in DC long enough by that time to know how the game was played. He wanted to be lied to and Barry was certainly willing enough to do that. Anyone w/ a brain knows though Bart knew exactly what was going on. To now make stmts like this is grossly dishonest. Its amazing how effortlessly pols lie. Its also amazing how the electorate continues to bear it.

Who cares. The guy cracked under the political pressure and sold out his values. He knew this was going to happen. He was just waiting for the deal to be structured in the most face-saving manner so he could hand them his vote while looking as if he was being honorable. He knew this. Heck, all of us here knew it and said so.

He sold himself for 30 pieces of silver.

Not sure I even believe that HE believed the lie to begin with. That said, I am glad, at least, that he is now speaking out and working for the other side.

He’s speaking up now because the camel s**t is about to hit the fan.

Obamacare is an unconstitutional RICO scheme run by organized crime, led by an illegal alien with 7 SSNs and a forged birth certificate.

People have DIED because of this criminal scam, and when Arpaio blows the lid off this operation, scum like Stupak and Waxman could be rounded up.

Let me translate:

STUPAK: I am not intellectually capable of serving my constituency in the office they have elected me to fill. Further more, I am so inept that I can be diverted and confused by others in government position that I consider my “betters” and I’ll operate as a political “marionnette” to any incumbent that provides a reasonable argument.

My constituency in Michigan is too intellectually vapid to understand the intricasies of politics; I, then, will follow in lock-step those of my elders/superiors so that I may govern over them. That way, we can advance the supremacy of the federal government and keep me in office.

Stupid voter says, “Huh?”

Stupak announced he was retiring and left office in the election immediately following his obamacare vote.

Let me tell you of a little story..and it is true. I called the former dept of education sec who had a radio show on at the time this bill was coming to the floor. I told “Bill” that Stupak was going to vote for it. He told me we needed to contact him to sway him. I again, told him that Stupak would vote for it. No! No! he replied, we can convince him to vote against it.
The good professor decided to go on vacation for Christmas and he had a stand in for him on his show. So, I again called and told the guy that Stupak was going to vote for it. The guy went on his diatribe that Stupak was an honest man and he would keep his word and blah, blah , blah.
I told the guy, again, that Stupak WILL vote for the bill.
That is the problem, we have been infiltrated by liberals in the GOP and they now think they run the show. And the only way to get things doneis by being nice.

Stupak, you got duped because you wanted to be duped. Being duped was easier than standing up for your principles. Which just goes to show you never really held those principles after all.

Proof that the democrat party is the communist party is the lockstep iron discipline they exert over their members. On every major vote, they all vote the “Party Line.” Stupak was no exception. The communists NEVER break ranks. That was the enduring legacy of Lenin. No dissent from the Party Line, or you get purged.

I forgot one thing Creek. He couldnt win Escanaba. Why? Because it is a heavy French area, and they are Catholic. Then, Iron Mountain is Italian. Then Menominee is French and on and on. The only place he could have done well is the Swede areas along the south lakeshore (or north shore of lake Michigan) of the UP. And in the upper lower pen.

National Right To Life -— Evil, or just Stupid?

October/November 2009 and ObamaCare was stalled in the House, the main sticking point being government funded abortions. There were enough Dems opposed to abortion that refused to vote for the ObamaCare if it contained any abortion language that it would not pass.

Representative Stupak (D) MI introduced his amendment that prohibited any government money from ObamaCare bill being used to fund abortions. This essentially would end all abortions, as no medical procedures outside the ObamaCare System can be done. No going to a doctor and paying him directly for anything. Thus, with his amendment, ALL abortions would be illegal.

This amendment to the House bill, if it passed, would give the above ‘Pro-Life’ Democrats a green light to vote for the ObamaCare bill.

Not enough Democrats supported the Stupak Amendment for it to pass. Many Democrats were vociferously opposed to it. It could only pass with Republican votes.

National Right to Life favored the Stupak Amendment, and insisted that Republicans vote for it. Further, they threatened any Republican who didn’t vote for it with their active opposition to that Republican during the 2010 fall election.

The Republicans caved, even those who could see the eventual outcome, right down to the last man. One hundred percent voted for the Stupak Amendment, along with a bunch of Dems who were opposed to abortions. Stupak handily passed.

Nobody believed the Amendment would stick; eventually it would/will be overridden in some fashion and that Government funded abortion would become part of ObamaCare.

With a green light, the ’Pro-Life’ Dems could vote for ObamaCare, and although many hard-line Leftists were angry, enough of them also could see the end game, and agreed to vote pass ObamaCare.
