Dreaming of 'President Ted Cruz' will turn into a nightmare for the GOP
The Washington Examiner ^ | March 11, 2014 | Noemie Emery

Posted on 03/12/2014 2:33:45 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

As with most things, there are good and bad aspects of the Tea Party movement. And all the bad ones were on display March 6 in a speech by Ted Cruz to the Conservative Political Action Conference that replayed every silly thing ever said by conservatives and added some riffs of his own.

He began with a mocking refrain about "presidents" Bob Dole, John McCain and Mitt Romney (two of them veterans impaired by their trauma), chiding them for not being his kind of conservative. He also asked if we remembered their reigns.

Well, we do remember, and we remember one more that for some reason is never brought up in this context: the glorious tenure of "President" Barry M. Goldwater, Mr. Conservative, far more in-your-face than Ronald Reagan, who lost by far more than those other worthies. Goldwater lost in one of the great drubbings in history, lost by more than any Republican but Alfred M. Landon, and carried only his home state and five southern states for all the wrong reasons (opposing -- for a fairly innocent reason -- the Civil Rights Act of 1964.)

No one followed the Cruz playbook more than Goldwater, and no one has managed to lose so conclusively. He offered a choice, not an echo, and nobody took it. But how, if Cruz is so right, could this have happened? It can’t, which is why it is never brought up in this context. In his world, it doesn’t exist.

As the Goldwater debacle has been excised from history, so have the actual reasons why Dole, McCain and Romney all lost. Dole lost because the Bill Clinton he faced in 1996 was not the Clinton of 1993-94, but the Third Way Bill Clinton...

Neither Abraham Lincoln nor FDR come back from the grave could've defeated LBJ that year just months after the "martyrdom" of JFK in Dallas. Terrible example.

It is why I do not buy newspapers anymore, and for a long time. Sadly, some people still think the trash that gets printed, represents reality.

Thanks Liberals!

We appreciate your advice!

It worked so well when you told us McCain and Romney would be great choices to run for President

You’re spot on with that. No one was going to defeat LBJ wearing the assassination sympathy hat of JFK.

Goldwater did however launch Ronald Reagan

So who is this bloviating opinionator? Noemie Emery? Another one to add to the trashbin of lazy journalistic morons feasting on Beltway leftovers.

A google search for Goldwater’s platform, and reading, Barry would be right at home with the tea party types.

nobody is a golden boy (or girl) for that matter.
if negative stuff is going to show its face (by his own
acts rather than accusations or criticisms from opponents) I am glad it is showing early. I like Cruz personally but
if there is a weakness there—there’s a weakness there.

When you campaign from atop the funeral bier of a martyred president, yes, it is a snap to win. But Johnson got his comeuppance, sure enough.

In addition, Goldwater was a reluctant candidate, his campaign staff was inept, and the party's establishment, with the exception of Richard Nixon, sat out the campaign after he won the nomination. A bad example, indeed.

Exactly—this is the overwhelming explanation for the election outcome of 1964. The effects of a nuclear bomb TV commercial, ideology, or anything else is impossible in light of the influence of Kennedy’s death. That was the election.

The establishment still thinks of the Republican Party as the globalist elitist backstabbers who've played constitutional conservatives for votes for decades.

Ted Cruz is the reality. We're not playing their games anymore. Let Ted Cruz and those who stand with him articulate the message that will inspire a nation.

Cristie will always be the guy who would close that bridge to punish a politician. JebBush will always be the gov who let Terry Schiavo die. Paul Ryan will always be the guy who singlehandedly handed the open ended non-budget to Obama while screwing veterans. Not one of them has any place in the discussion anymore.

What “weakness” did the author point out, other than her preference for a much more moderate Ripon Republican?
