In case you missed it last night, Matthew McConaughey won the Oscar for best actor as a result of his work in "Dallas Buyer's Club." To kick off his acceptance speech, McConaughey thanked God for the blessings in his life and then he thanked his family.
"First off I want to thank God, because he's the one I look up to, he's graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human kind. He has shown me that it's a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late (British actor) Charlie Laughton, who said, 'When you got God you got a friend and that friend is you.'"

Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett, who won for best actress, thanked pervert Woody Allen for her Oscar win.
He might have, who knows. It’s Hollyweird after all.
I have as much substance as those praising him as some kind of Saint over one statement.
Baloney. He’s one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. He short-circuited nothing. Relax.
Brother, I would gently remind you that bearing false witness is one of the big ten no-no’s. ;-)
I am not going to be silent as people pretend some two-bit actor is a good person because he said “God” on TV, how many crap movies full of ungodly stuff has he made??

McConaughey has been doing romantic comedies for years now. Some of his earlier works (i.e. Dazed and Confused) were a bit risque, but they were not adult-oriented in any way.
I will give him a LOT of credit: he’s stayed true to himself. He’s the consummate gentleman.

I don’t have to agree with you though. Especially on the parts I *KNOW* from Scripture are wrong — such as making up sins and attributing them to a man. Sorry. GeronL — that is simply unrighteous, no matter how you spin it.
Interesting contrast. I recently watched a “True Detective” episode in which the McConaughey character ridicules people at a tent revival. He goes on at length to call them deluded morons. After seeing this I suppose it shows what a good actor he is. The only question is which performance is the act.

Just because some two-bit actor in Hollyweird used the word “God”, some people act as if something good has happened.
It’s a parable. A euphemism. To show how shallow some people are.

No, it’s not. Jesus’ parables never employed real-life people and attributed to them, by name, deeds that they did not do. It was always “a certain man...” or something like that. That’s what makes them parables. Words have meaning.
Like I said, no matter how you spin it, when you publicly proclaim that a real man took hookers to a party instead of going home to his wife and kids — and you have no proof or even evidence of that — you are bearing false witness against that man, and that is a sin.
I didn’t write the book — but I can read it, and that’s what it says.

Regardless of how we feel about Matthew (I am a sinner as well and shall throw no stones); the above statement is way beyond Hollywood. It just may give others, especially his fan base and peers, the impetus to also thank God for all that we have been given. In a world growing more secular by the minute, this statement is something that needs to be heard over and over.

True that. These days we want to grab any crumb of hope given the social decay we are drowning in.
I had the same initial reaction, but after having a think, its brilliant.
The problem with heroes today is that we pick them, we aspire to them, and eventually we find out they have feet made of clay.
What I took from his speech was that we should aspire to the people we want to grow up to be. We should look back at ourselves and say, “I’m a better man, and someday I’m going to be the man I really want to be.”
From my perspective, its a way to keep from developing your own clay feet. It’s also a way to keep challenging your expectations of yourself.
Everyone’s circumstances, skill sets, personalities, and opportunities are different. His outlook on ‘heroism’ is scalable. It’s a model that expects you to recover from your mistakes, and to aspire to the man you want to become as you face God on the last day.
I’m going through that right now with my inlaws - one attempted suicide, and the other is so depressed about being a burden that he is nearly inconsolable.
I watched Ghandi this weekend. I’m sorry it took me this long. I think he had a similar philosophy.
My FIL’s new job is to record or write his life story for his grand and great grandchildren. He’s lived an entire lifetime and made his triumphs and mistakes. His job now is to complete his mission as educator and reflect on his life and times.
The pity party is over, in that regard.
I’m a better man now than I was, but not nearly the man I hope to be in 10 years.
The point he made just prior to his views on heroism is key - gratitude begets a sort of virtuous perpetual motion. It impacts everyone you touch. Coupled with a commitment to being your own hero 10 years out, I think it is a replicable formula for anyone, regardless of religion.
