The morons at NYT didn’t seem too concerned 80 years ago, why change now?
I agree - controlling the Black Sea again would give Putin lots of unpleasant opportunities as far as other Eastern European countries are concerned.
Russia wants to make sure its neighbors toe the line. The Russian Bear after all has heft.
And no one can afford to offend Russia.
Everyone knew well in advance that Russia would never sit idle for such a move.
I say it's funny because it is odd how the left and equivalent parties of the EU decide, when and where, to make moves around the globe....over homosexual rights. Gads.
They were happy that their neighbor to the North had forced an energy monopoly on them that locked them into paying three times as much for heat and power as anyone else in Europe?
It was outside meddlers who first suggested that making their entire paychecks over to Gazprom every month was a raw deal?
Actually, he's not.
Obama Skips National Security Team Meeting on Russia, Ukraine
The most serious global security issue since 9/11 and Obama can't bother to keep up on the details. Hardly a surprise, I'm sure he had a tee time.
500,000 people in the street, and you think it’s about homos. LOLOL
Don't forget we got Kerry and Biden on the job too--there's an underwhelming brain trust made in hell.
I never said the Ukranine was ever happy with their lot..I'm just pointing out that the timing of escalation of this long term conflict is rather telling. The deal offered by the EU is the provocation.
Obama has made two "threats", if you want to call them that, to Russia in recent months and the first was over gay rights. Now this ....
Duh. Just look at the map, NYTimes (yes, science's latest invention, the map). Any natural barriers between eastern Ukraine and Moscow? Any warm water ports on Russian territory providing access to the Mediterranean? Locations of pipe lines leading to Europe?
Yes, yes Russia will allow Ukraine to be controlled by the EU and NATO. NYTimes is mystified as to why Russia is behaving this way.
Sarah Palin has more intuition and common sense regarding foreign affairs than all these nuanced pseudo-intellectuals put together.
All the fools were yucking it up to Tina Fey jokes, and now the world is paying a price.
This is what happens when you put the Choom gang in charge of very serious and sensitive international affairs. You get Choom gang style results.
I see no danger whatsoever for Putin in any of this.
Nice try...the aged old strategic conflict in the Ukraine is over energy...the reason for provoking it at this moment in time is over gay rights or "human rights" as the world commie movement likes to state it.
Look at your timeline for political interaction. The American left laughed at Romney in 2012 when he called Russia a threat. Now we are on the verge of WWIII. The EU took moves to provoke this...why now?
The protestors in Ukraine were not in the street about homos. Seriously.
Again...the protesters were in the streets over an energy deal and money, the timing by the provocateurs of worldwide chaos was over homos.
Oil and natural gas. Duh!
It’s Barackhenaten!
Russia has put money into the naval docks there in the Crimea, and bases their fleet there. Personally....I probably wouldn’t do anything different than what they have done already. Historically....the Crimea wasn’t part of the Ukraine, and most Ukrainians are well aware of the short history of the two.
The odd side to this story is that fifty-odd ethnic groups make up the grand Ukraine today. To just say that ethnic Russians are the only issue....would be stupid. So, this is a fairly robust episode, and I’d just sit back for several years of civil warfare. If you ask me....it’s Yugoslavia all over again.
