Taken: HI convict pleads guilty to stealing $200,000 in gov’t welfare

HONOLULU — Hawaii has some of the most generous welfare benefits in the country, and one man took full advantage of them.

The man, who went by the name “Vaughn Sherwood” — a name he apparently stole — took more than $200,000 from taxpayers, the FBI said.

On Thursday, shackled in handcuffs and dressed in a white prison uniform, he pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to four counts related to theft of government property, identity theft and illegal possession of a firearm.

According to Ron Johnson, the assistant U.S. attorney handling the case, the man inherited $360,000 from his deceased parents and, without disclosing it to the government, hid the cash in two safe deposit boxes at two banks. The federal indictment revealed Sherwood also owned a sailboat and a jet boat and drove a Mercedes Benz S420.He lived in an apartment in Waikiki, yet he admitted Thursday he obtained $6,500 in welfare cash payments, $5,800 in food stamps and $24,000 in medical benefits from the state Department of Human Services over nine years. He claimed he was homeless.

I live in North Georgia where my county of 30,000 has 6,000 SNAP recipients. We also have at least 4 enclaves of LBJs Great Society Public Housing left over from the 60s and 70s that are completely filled. The rest of them live in the thousands of rental trailers via Section 8 vouchers throughout the county. Outside, you’ll see cars, many with Handicap Stickers/Plates on them (these are the ones that have hit the SSDI motherload).

If you drive by their homes and trailers in the morning around 7 or 8 AM in the morning while it is still mostly dark outside, you won’t see any lights, anyone stirring in these places. In fact, you won’t see nearly anyone stirring until say 10 or 11AM, when they are off to WalMart, Kroger or wherever to use their Georgia Peach EBT cards. You sure as heck don’t see them sitting down at those little terminals there in those stores applying for a job.

As far as I’m concerned, they really aren’t any different than the convict.
