Hollywood earthquake is third in 10 days
Los Angeles Times ^ | February 8, 2014 | Jason Felch

A shallow magnitude 3.0 earthquake that was centered near Hollywood and shook parts of the Los Angeles basin Saturday morning was the third temblor to hit the area in the last two weeks. The latest quake occurred at 10:13 a.m. at a depth of 5.0 miles and was felt from the Westside to East L.A., said Anthony Guarino, a seismologist at Caltech. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter was near the intersection of Melrose and Virgil avenues, on the eastern edge of Hollywood. It was the third magnitude 3.0 or greater quake to hit that area in the last 10 days. “It’s pretty standard for L.A.,” Guarino said. “There are a lot of different faults there.” Clusters of small quakes are common in the Los Angeles basin, and generally don’t signify that the "big one" is coming, Guarino said. Every earthquake has a one in five chance of being a foreshock for a larger quake, he added. The odds of that decline quickly as time goes by. The region remains overdue for a massive quake. The southern section of the San Andreas Fault, which starts near the Salton Sea and runs north to Palmdale, has historically caused a large earthquake every 150 years on average. It has not ruptured since 1680.

California’s insanity is imposed by two cities, LA and San Francisco. The rest of the state is basically Texas.

Thanks. That is what most outsiders don't understand about this state. Where I live we have more gun owners, and less crime, than in most places in the USA and there isn't a gang banger or palm tree to be seen within 300 miles of here. Plus with our 14,000 mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, it would very difficult to break off and float anywhere.

They know not what they wish for. I just rechecked the calculations, and found an error, a reversed sign in the fifth set of differential equations:

When the big one hits, it is everything EAST of the San Andreas Fault that sinks into the Atlantic.

If you wanted to design geography specifically to shield a city from offshore-generated tsunami, you might do it just like Puget Sound with the San Juan Islands, which would break up any tsunami:

P.S. Ferries run from Seattle to Victoria on Vancouver island and separate ferries from a ways north of Victoria to Vancouver on the mainland.

It is true the tsunami could raise the water level somewhat even in Elliott Bay, but there isn’t near enough volume in the tsunami to raise all of Puget Sound very much. Most all of the energy would be reflected and dissipated by the San Juans.

No fracking, but believe it or not there are working oil wells there that have been in operation for decades.

Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by fire from heaven. Asteroids are one of the judgments during the tribulation though. Probably happens when the poles invert.

Excuse me ..??

I’m in San Diego, and I’d thank you to stop praying for the demise of the state.

Besides, God can always do a lot when people become desperate.

Thanks, but my comment was simple ridicule of the green weenies. I being a native of Taxifornia am aware of the oil production along with the new wells being drilled in urban areas, others from different locals may not, so still good info.

I love NorCal. Just beautiful to visit. Lots of conservatism in the Northern part, isn’t there? Let’s make it two states. Then hubby and I could afford to live there, with favorable gun laws and low taxes.
