Brutal Murder of Pinay Stuns Community in Las Vegas

The recent brutal murder of a 29-year old Filipina by her husband stunned the Pinoy community in Las Vegas Valley.

"It's mixed emotion because we miss Daisy. We are very sad. We are very sad for Daisy. Sana matapos na para manahimik na rin lahat. Hindi natin alam kung hanggang kailan ito ipa sa Diyos na lang natin," said Elizabeth Fischer, a friend and co-worker of victim, Daisy Dahan.

Questions continue as to what triggered 40-year old Richard Dahan to murder his wife, voluntarily surrender and confess to police. He also gave full details on how he brutally murdered his wife of two and half years.

Daisy had earlier complained of her husband's physical and emotional abuse. In a sworn statement dated December of 2012, Daisy stated that she will only go back to their apartment unit if Richard will stop the physical and emotional abuse.

"May mga organizations dito sa Las Vegas you can always call them they will help you. It's just kinda sad that we learned about Daisy's situation. It's too late," said Fischer.

The preliminary hearing for Richard Dahan is set for February 27 while friends, family, and even strangers continue to help raise funds to fly Daisy's body back to the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas Township Justice of the Peace, Judge William Bill Kephart, encourages kababayans, as well as other Asian communities, to come out if they think they are a victim of domestic violence.

"They are afraid to talk to people because they can't speak their language. They're afraid they're gonna be treated wrong because they can't speak their language. But we actually have programs out there that will work towards finding the actual interpreters to speak to them," said Kephart.

He added, "They shouldn't be afraid to reach out for help. If they feel that they are being wronged or being injured or threatened in any way then they need to reach out for assistance."

Studies show that abuse takes several forms: emotionally, verbally, sexually, and physically. People who have the tendency to commit abuse have the following traits: jealous, controlling, sexually demanding, and selfish. These are predetermined concepts of what roles their mates may play in life.

"Just because you are in a relationship doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be beaten on and take it. It's sad. It's unfortunate that we have it that somebody says 'I love you' and the next day he or she is beating you, but it's the true fact of domestic violence," Kephart said.

Kephart added that each state has domestic victims' advocacy groups as well as language interpreters to assist victims of domestic violence. One can seek out such groups and other government groups to assess if one is abused.

Domestic violence statistics state that every 9 seconds a woman is assaulted or beaten in the United States. Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten.

In Daisy Dahan's open murder case, domestic violence was what led to her own death.

I keep having to tell Filipinas that they don’t really want to go to the US. Many continue to believe that there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I found my pot of gold at the beginning of the rainbow.

English is a second language that most Filipinos have, at least, a rudimentary command of.

What a “brave” man, beating up a defenseless woman!! Sadly I see far more of these kinds of stories then I would like... what the heck is wrong with people!!

Most abusers have a history of doing this... am sure this was not his first rodeo.

I worked with a Filipina who told me that her home country was horribly corrupt and that she would never go back to live there.
