How Rick Santorum is laying the groundwork for another presidential run
Yahoo News ^ | January 28, 2014 | Chris Moody

alk about campaign trail déjà vu.

As hundreds of bundled-up supporters gathered around him on a freezing January day, Rick Santorum towered over a lectern and rallied his troops. Aides pecking at smartphones lined the perimeter of the hotel conference room. An army of young children scurried across the floor. Volunteers collected email addresses and phone numbers at a fold-up table near the door.

The people, the “candidate” — even the weather — gave the event a presidential primary campaign feel. But this scene played out in the Capitol Hill Hyatt in Washington, not a Sheraton in West Des Moines — and there won’t be a presidential election for another two years.

It’s at events like this gathering before the March for Life, which marked the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, that Santorum is conducting a presidential campaign in waiting. There were banners, aides, supporters, a stump speech — a whole campaign-style apparatus organized by Patriot Voices, a conservative advocacy group the former Republican presidential hopeful founded after ceding the field to Mitt Romney in April 2012.

Walker is fantastic - for Wisconsin. Let's keep him there where he is most effective. He is an unapologetic amnesty pusher, so I want him as far away as possible from a federal position. This one issue would kill our country for good.

Jindal, I could support with every spare penny I have.

Jim DeMint would be my Dream candidate, with a close second being Mike Pence.

Dennis Vacco was NY Attorney General, swept into office in the 1994 election. A real conservative.

He was rejected at the ballot box four years later, in 1998.

Are you sure he didn't morph into a liberal while in office?

we have stupid politicians who believe their own PR.

The staffers run the show.

Elections no longer matter because the unelected bureacrats are now in charge and empowered to make up rules. (see epa, fcc, faa, etc)

Since he dropped out in 2012, Santorum has been laying the groundwork for another run. His advocacy group provides him a platform to raise money

This is the George Pataki never need a real job, post-political lifestyle model.

By always maybe running for president again, you can set up a permanent campaign that allows you to keep collecting money from "supporters" while you ponder your decision.

It's a way to legally sell your political access and connections to people who want a foot in the door, and establish important tax loopholes that help you keep more of the money they give you.

Do you want to meet with the EPA undersecretary in charge of water permits in Cayahooga County? Rick Santorum or George Pataki can make that happen for you... maybe you would like to make a donation to his political exploratory committee.

If you want to kill the EPA undersecretary in charge of water permits in Cayahooga County, make an appointment with Bob Torricelli.

When conservatism supposedly “fails,” it’s because the office holder somehow compromises on conservative principles. In other words, he becomes no longer conservative.

Santorum, I voted for you -— as a LESSER OF EVILS ONLY. Believe me, even all of your voters DONT WANT YOU. Step off.

We need to focus our energy on someone who can actually win and bring an end to this nightmare.

Agreed. Santorum would make a great next-door neighbor. But he is completely flat as a candidate. He could not even win reelection as senator in his home state. And senators are almost always reelected. Santorum has no personality, no sizzle. In this media age, good ideas are not enough.

As my tagline suggests, we need another Reagan-type candidate. Someone to hold the conservative base AND appeal to the folks in the middle.

IMHO, it (rick's time) was only a figment of his imagination.

Not really. Reagan too ran again after losing the primaries. Finally, we have someone who can present the voters a stark choice. Someone who is both an economic and social conservative and can carry his native PA!

There is an element at FR that absolutely trashes Santorum whenever his name is mentioned.......and I find this sickening

Why do you heap such scorn upon him.

Don’t we have enough true & evil adversaries without vilifying this pro life, pro family man

I left FR during the last election because of senseless attacks on Santorum

Santorum is becoming the Republican Hubert Humphrey - "Candidate that Wouldn't Stop Running (and Losing)" of the 21st century.

Please, no more loser re-runs.
