Study Finds People with Guns More At-Risk for Suicide and Homicide
daily beast ^ | january 20, 2014 | Brandy Zadrozny

Now, a new meta-analysis of gun research—the first systematic review of its kind—from the University of California, San Francisco, published in Annals of Internal Medicine today, has seemingly put an end to the debate over safety, at least in terms of suicide and homicide. Pooling results from 15 investigations, researchers found that a person with access to a gun is unequivocally less safe in terms of intentional death. Those with the ability to get to a gun are three times as likely to commit suicide and twice as likely to be the victim of a homicide than people without access.

Previous studies that include population level estimates have pegged the risks as even higher.

Guns are the most popular and effective method of killing—both of oneself and of others. Around 31,000die by the gun annually and gun deaths make up over half of all completed suicides and over two-thirds of all homicides.

The study found that access to guns had a different effect on men and women. Men were nearly four times more likely to commit suicide than when firearms were not accessible, while women were almost three times more likely to be victims of homicide.  And while men make up over three quarters of suicides and homicides overall, women with firearm access are more than twice as likely to be a victim of homicide than a man with gun access, mainly because of the increased threat of domestic violence.

People are willing to accept risks which they assume and control. A person could go skydiving on Sunday and complain all day long that his employer is exposing him to cleaning solvents on Monday.

So, I am willing to accept the risk that I create for myself by choosing to have a gun. Managing and minimizing that risk is something I enjoy as a responsible adult. But I am not willing to accept the risk that comes from being unarmed and at the mercy of those who might wish to do me harm.

At least this article makes it somewhat clear that the deaths from suicide by one’s own gun dwarf the deaths from homicide by one’s own gun. That comes down to how one feels about the individual’s right to end it all.

(Most Libs would outlaw suicide because it is illegal to destroy government property...)

In related news, men who are married are far more likely to be stabbed by their spouse than those who remain single.

This guy cannot even do 3rd grade math:

"without access" means ZERO ACCESS

"without: - out of the limits of; beyond" Webster`s Dict.

stupoid illogical statement:

"Those with the ability to get to a gun are three times as likely to commit suicide and twice as likely to be the victim of a homicide than people without access"

\access "www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/access‎

access ="a way of getting near, at, or to something or someone. : a way of being able to use or get something." : Webster

if the guy has no way to get a gun, it is physically impossible for him to shoot himself or anyone else.

Since this guy`s reasoning is illogical and mathematically impossible I will correct his stupoid statement:

"Those with the ability to get to a gun are infinitely as likely to commit suicide and infinitesimally as likely to be the victim of a homicide than people without access" because "without access" means a person having no gun in his hand cannot pull the trigger, you idiot.

ZERO CHANCE = if"NO ACCESS" = ZERO ACCESS =WITHOUT ACCESS

This guy is a liar and moron at the same time- incredible!

more bs commie progaganda. Liars do figure.

Japanese murder rate is fairly low. IIRC one of the world's lowest.

Suicide, on the other hand, is one of the world's highest.

Oh okay, I will add my own spin. At least gun owners who desire to off themselves take personal responsibility by offing themselves with their own weapons.

I mean, they didn’t go jump off a bridge they didn’t build or anything like that. LOL

Simple statistics test: how many firearms murder victims are armed with a firearm at the time they are murdered?

Also, how many suicide attempts are there among people without firearms access? With a firearm an attempt is very likely to be successful, while attempts with, say, pills are not as successful.

ANY study of violence that excludes the Race and/or Ethnicity of the perpetrators and victims is utterly worthless.

We need a study that shows readers of the Daily Beast are most likely to be homosexual rapists and murderers of young teen boys. The data can be skewed to show anything in this lawless, truthless society.

When they vote away my guns, I still have a vote: 30 of them per magazine.

Self-defense in your home against criminals is called “justifiable homicide” and isn’t a crime.

I’m sure they’re including all ‘homicides’ in their data, given their agenda.

Well then, this study settles it, gun ownership is good for everyone. Gun owners obviously want to keep their guns. And lefties should wan gun owners to keep them especially because the risk for suicide is greater for gun owners. Cuomo basically said that gun owners have no place in NY, so I’m sure he would be happy with suicide for gun owners.

a person with access to a gun

This includes Obama's sons who get their firearms on the black market.

If Obama's sons were excluded from the crime statistics the USA would be one of the safest and least violent countries in the world.
