Both the media and the administration have adopted the very scary approach of lying to the public quite openly. What's more, they know that much of the public fully realizes that it is being lied to. And neither the media nor the administration cares. They just keep lying. They have no fallback position. There's no way to recover any hint of public trust.

Which is why I expect Gotterdammerung when they can no longer sustain the facade. They will go full Bolshevik.
