When I was an 11-year old kid in 1978, and we got a foot of snow, school opening was delayed by an hour or two - just long enough for me to shovel our 60’ long driveway, before getting on the bus and going to school.
Here is a deadly blizzard.

How low did temperature go in the ‘78 incident, and how long did the extreme cold linger; or was the ‘78 blizzard one for the record books because of deep snow rather than unprecedented low temperatures.
The very low temps seem to be the mark of this event. I read that at Rhinelander, Wis. (my birthplace) minus 52F was recorded yesterday, lower than any previously known there.
Yeah, I’d say people are wimps. I can remember when I was a kid (and I wonder if it wasn’t the blizzard of ‘78) where dad opened the door and the snow was piled right up to the top. He just laughed and climbed up into it and shoveled it all out.... he had to milk the cows after all.
This is NOTHING right now. Cold, yes, I hate it, but it’s nothing, really.

My most vivid memory of it had little to do with the snow. I had to pick up from the airport a visiting technical expert from Queens University in NY. He described himself as: "I'll be the only one on the airplane that's five feet tall, with a full black beard wearing a coon skin coat and a black yarmulke." So I borrowed a four wheel drive truck, and went to the airport to pick him up. I waited at the gate (no TSA then), and ran up to him when I saw him. The person I ran up to was startled, and had no clue who I was.
It turns out there were TWO people on the airplane that were "five feet tall, with a full black beard wearing a coon skin coat and a black yarmulke."
I survived (barely!) the Ice Storm of ‘76 up here in Wisconsin. Ice coated everything; inches and inches of it. Downed power lines and a lot of the trees in our yard were ruined.
We were stuck in our house for a week with no electricity. We had to pee in a bucket! Mom cleaned out the freezers and Dad fired up the grill and we ate like kings and pretty much fed the neighborhood.
The worst part? I was a 16 year old girl at the time - WITH NO PHONE SERVICE! OMG! The Humanity! LOL!
The one good thing about living in South Florida in 1978.
