Good offense is always an option. Not a black belt, but "dabbled" in shorin su ryu about 40 years ago. Disciplined and formal mode of street fighting - break what comes at you and rip things off (ears/nose, etc.) as necessary. As I age, I relay more on my manufactured weapons even though I try to stay in shape.
I’m still very healthy and limber in my 50’s, at CQ prefer my hands unoccupied. My last street encounter was a year ago, basically turned or spun around a young man’s sucker punch, where he attacked from behind, I was now behind him. When you get older your technique replaces butting heads.
It’s worth it even if you never fight because it trains your thinking.
