Doku Umarov: Kremlin's enemy who aims to ruin Sochi Olympics
The Australian ^ | December 31, 2013 11:45AM | Roger Boyes

HE is known as Russia's Osama bin Laden; Public Enemy No 1 for the Kremlin. Even the US has put a $5 million bounty on his head.

Doku Umarov, 49, the Chechen warlord with the blackest of reputations, is assumed to be the mastermind behind a bombing campaign intended to disrupt Vladimir Putin's cherished dream of a successful Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Certainly, he has set out his aims clearly enough. The Olympics, he said, were being held on "the bones of many, many dead Muslims buried on our land by the Black Sea".

Doku Umarov: Kremlin's enemy who aims to ruin Sochi Olympics

BS. The enemy who aims to ruin the Sochi Olympics is Saudi Prince Bandar Bush, our great ally, who told Putin to his face,

”As an example, I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics in the city of Sochi on the Black Sea next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us, and they will not move in the Syrian territory’s direction without coordinating with us. These groups do not scare us. We use them in the face of the Syrian regime but they will have no role or influence in Syria’s political future.”

So the question is how is Putin going to retaliate against the Saudis and their US allies.

“The Chechens picked the wrong person, Putin, and area, Sochi to cause trouble. Putin is not one to mess with.”

Jihadisim is a mental disorder. The opportunity of mayhem with a prime time global audience of Western nations invested in the Olympics will outweigh any threats from Putin.

And it doesn’t have to be an Olympic event that is targeted. Plenty of hotels, restaurants, pubs, shopping areas, and public transportation that support the games are vulnerable.

A scaled down TET type offensive with simultaneous suicide squads at several different locations similar to what happened at the the Westgate Mall in Kenya a few months ago is logistically possible.

All the terrorists will be dead in the end but that’s what they want.

Putin’s response will leave a mark but that’s the cost of doing terrorist business in Russia.

Cosell was in Munich to do the boxing events. Til the day he died he was jealous and angry that ABC stayed with Jim McKay the entire course of the siege. No one from ABC News division was on the scene at the Olympic Village. McKay covered it til the very end when he said “They’re gone. They’re all gone.” McKay’s performance that day is one of the great individual performances in TV journalism. Not bad for a guy who got his start narrating Divorce Court.

“...were being held on “the bones of many, many dead Muslims buried on our land by the Black Sea”....”

Keep it up, and they’ll be held on the bones of many, many MORE dead moslems...

Wherever these asshats are, there’s war, terror, and destruction.

One of these days, the rest of the world will say “Enough”...

They just can’t live in peace with anyone else.

>>So the question is how is Putin going to retaliate against the Saudis and their US allies.<<

In mid-1980s a wing of Paki F-16s downed a couple of Soviet bombers on a strafing run vs Taliban convoys delivering supplies to islamists in the mountains between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Shortly after, Soviet and Afghan POWs has started a revolt at Badaber airbase in Pakistan. All were slaughtered by the Pakis at the end.
Soviets demanded Pakistan to stop all aid to islamists and apologize for the events but none has followed.

As a result Soviet KGB and Afghan KHAD has started a campaign of terror within Pakistan claiming thousands of lives and a major blow to Paki infrastructure. They had numerous “accidents” at they powerplants, collapsing bridges, explosions at military bases etc. Soviet and Afghan airforces also disrupted air traffic in Pakistan, shooting Paki aircraft for “violating a Soviet airspace” well within Pakistan borders.
It has culminated with killing of Pakistan’s president ul-Haq and US ambassador to Pakistan in a misterious air crash in 1987.

Now compare a value of a couple jets and a dozen POWs for the Soviets 30 years ago and Olympics now which is a Putin’s most celebrated pet project.

Also note that Pakistan is a nuke power and Saudi Arabia isn’t.

Prince Bandar is overplaying his hand for sure.

Sochi is a major resort area on the Black Sea. It is sort of Miami Beach of Russia. Vladimir Putin is going to put some serious hurt on the Chechens if they mess the Olympics.

It's pretty hard to imagine what more they (the Russians) could do that they haven't already... for the last few hundred years or so. Nukes, perhaps?

This guy Umarov is not to be taken lightly. He's been at it with the Russians for a long time (1994), and I have to believe the KGB would be far more "aggressive", shall we say, than our guys would be, in trying to find and take him out. He's right on Russia's doorstep, too, in an area in which they claim authority (for all intents and purposes.) Yet Umarov has survived so far. Further, unlike Osama Bin Laden, his reasons for hating the Russians are intensely personal: If you read his bio on Wikipedia, well... I would not target innocent civilians if an occupying force had "disappeared" several of my family members, but I sure as heck would not take it passively.

Sochi is quite interesting. The good includes the resorts, beaches, and the climate. Per Wikipedia: Sochi has a humid subtropical climate[24][25] with mild winters (average 11 °C (52 °F) during the day and 4 °C (39 °F) at night) in the period from December to March and warm summers (average 24 °C (75 °F) during the day and 16 °C (61 °F) at night) in the period from May to October. Geez...

The bad includes it's proximity to problem areas. I also can't imagine how one could make such an extended urban area secure without turning it into something like East Berlin was in the '70's: "Greater Sochi" is 90 miles long. An attack would not need to hit the Olympic village or venues to be effective -- instead Umarov's group could target something 30 miles away where they can cause a lot of casualties. It will still be reported as an attack on Sochi. The Russians may have their hands full, I am afraid.

I think you are absolutely correct. This will be a contest of wills between Putin who will not tolerate international embarrassment versus Doku Umarov who hates the Russians and will use any opportunity to make Putin look bad.

Going to be an interesting Olympics.

but Russia should have cut Chechnya loose when the USSR collapsed, instead of beating it into submission, losing 30,000 troops in the process and killing God knows how many Chechen civilians

Yeah, except for the fact I doubt Russia wanted to be held hostage by a bunch of radical Islamic nutcases for the oil and gas they send Europe...via a pipeline

It’s a chicken or egg type situation. Would Chechnya have been so radical if it had simply been cut loose in 1991? Maybe it’s anger at being chained to the Russian Federation that has fueled jihadi wrath. Chechnya has become Russia’s Ireland. The best is yet to come.

In 1970 5 Mig-21's flown by Soviet pilots were shot down by Israeli Phantoms and Mirages over Egypt. The Soviets never took to the sky against Israel again. IOWs Russia's bark can be worse than its bite.

Here’s your clue....the word “islamic”

Name one islamic territory where muslims live in peace with their infidel neighbor. ..?

I’m pretty sure that place doesn’t exist....

Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Tadzhikistan, Kazakstan. All Muslim, and all living well enough with their neighbors (although Azerbaijan had a nasty war with Armenia years ago over a strip of territory). Russia had the good sense to just let them go. The only problem with Chechnya is that it wasn’t a full-fledged Soviet “republic” like those others were, and if it were granted independence, some other non-Russian enclaves might have demanded the same.

I haven’t been to Israel in 1970 to witness it and also have no idea how a Mig-21 or Israel are any related to this topic.

Chechnya was de-facto independent since late 1980s into about 1994 for the first time and once again in 1996-2000.
It was a really tough time for Chechen non-muslims and the entire neighborhood.
Chechens really deserved every bit of pain they got upon themselves.
