On December 16th the Gainesville, GA, school board voted to purchase Colt M4 AR-15s for resource officers in its middle and high schools.

The rifles will be kept in safes in school and will be accessed "using biometric technology." This will limit access only to those people -- resource officers -- whose finger prints have been saved into the biometric mechanism.

I believe a card reader or (very close) proximity device linked to the officer’s badge would be sufficient, with the option of using an ‘old fashioned’ hard key as a fail-safe option. I work in IT as well, and have also found finger print readers to be fickle enough to make them undesirable for such a situation.

We use passwords on all our ‘Bloombergs’ we never used the biometric option.

Please do not misunderstand me... I agree... I carry everyday. I am just saying that with the leftists in schools... maybe they need precautions to keep the commie’s hands off weapons... not the public.

Why in a safe? Buy them slings and tactical vests. Have them carry loaded mags (30 round standard mags). You want a deterrent, that's a deterrent. That says "You start something, you want your 10 minutes of fame? Not going to happen. That guy there will be on you in seconds..."

For indoor school work an AR-15 is not an efficient idea, expecially locked up somewhere. Sidearms on the hip of a well practiced security officer are the best solution. They are immediately available and just as or more effective indoors and certainly safer.

During the Cold War years, one of the US Army’s forward deployed aviation units in Germany had an instance where a helicopter flight school washout took a UH-1 up for a joy ride. He was arrested when he landed and the command responded by locking up their birds while on the ground. Then they had an alert and the guy with the keys to unlock the birds had taken them home with him.

Not enough information in the article to know if this is a good thing or not. If the Resource officers aren’t carrying, what good is it to have the AR-15’s locked up under biometric protection?

I suspect it’s more of that *feel good* legislation...to make the serfs think that *something* is being done to protect the chillins.

Knowing what bureaucratic nightmares schools are....you have to have triplicate requisitions submitted six weeks in advance.

To paraphrase a popular witticism, "When seconds count, the rifle is only minutes away."

If this is the pic you're thinking of, it's an M1 Carbine...
