8 Photos You Didn't See From Obama's Trip to South Africa

On Tuesday, conservative news outlets in the United States decided that the best way to commemorate the life of Nelson Mandela, and to report on the memorial services in his honor, was to manufacture a controversy about an AFP photo of President Barack Obama shooting a selfie with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. According to Fox News, the “international incident” was so bad that, “The tsk-tisk-ing could be heard across continents.”

Liberal news outlets countered with a photograph from former President George W. Bush’s Instagram feed, taken at the same memorial, in which he’s seen posing with pop star Bono.

Two things were lost amid the nonsensical partisan wrangling. First, the furor shamefully overshadowed the memorial service itself, and the heartfelt messages that were delivered by Mandela’s family and colleagues. Second, such outcries overlook the close quarters in which our Democratic and Republican politicians actually live and work.

Candid images from White House photographer Pete Souza tell another story.

At the end of the day, they are all politicians (excluding Laura Bush) and they SHOULD know that they must leave the politics at home and present themselves with DIGNITY at a international, public event such as the Mandela memorial service, where political bullshit would be inappropriate. To behave otherwise would be an embarrassment for our country. For them to arrive with an agenda full of snobbery, nastiness, etc. would be just plain childish. They all got along for the day. Get over it.

When we saw the 'selfie photo' we wondered if Michelle took it in stride. I wondered if she would make him sit on the other side of her afterwards.

Well, here's a photo that makes it seem that may have taken place.

So, was Cruz right or wrong for walking out on Castro?

“”Bono and Bush collaborated on many occasions to save the lives of millions in Africa who suffer from AIDS.””

How much good has this accomplished? South Africa has the highest number of AIDS victims in the world.

Look at stats here and then google older stats...no improvement in spite of Bush and Clinton foundations.

“”For George Bush to see what this evil man is doing to this country and then “yuck it up” with them is beyond disgusting.””

I was about to give up reading the posts when I spotted yours. I agree with you. Yesterday a freeper replied to one of my posts on another thread on this subject that “George Bush IS NOT THE PRESIDENT!” No kidding? I said that I didn’t think his behavior with Bono was any more appropriate than any of the other carrying on we saw and read about.

I’m not the president either but I do know how to behave at functions such as funerals/memorial services.

I’m sorry - I just can’t get over GWB going to South Africa on Air Force One with the obozo’s when he didn’t even go to Lady Thatcher’s funeral.

I'm of the opinion that any shots taken from the Obamas' left (see the one where Obama is kissing Michelle's hand as she smiles directly into the camera's lens) were done by their official photographer, and are generally flattering. Any shots taken from another angle (see the "selfie" shots) were done by someone else, and show a much different couple.

From the left:

From other angles:

Depends on how he walked out. Did he quietly excuse himself and leave, or did he make a blazing speech on his way out?
Either way, he allowed politics or a personal agenda (although his father fled from Cuba before Fidel Castro came into power) and emotion to dictate his actions for that moment. Did he know that Raul Castro would be speaking at the event? If so, why did he attend feeling the way he does about Castro? Something to think about.

Good points and you’re right on.

It’s as if W is giving Obama his approval. There is no excuse.

I thought his father was imprisoned by Castro?

At least, that’s what I thought I heard when listening to him speak.

“”So was that Holder? Susan Rice, VJ, HC? Did they all ride on the plane together with the 0bamas? Did George & Laura ride with them, too?””

Yes - GWB and Laura rode with the obozo’s on Air Force One as well as Hillary BUT Clinton and Carter were on separate planes or plane..I read that Clinton had another engagement and left later so I don’t know if he went with Carter or not. I saw an article that Carter’s wife also went but of the pictures taken, Carter’s wife wasn’t with him. He was sitting next to a railing so she wouldn’t have been out of the picture I saw.

I don’t know why every dog and cat of the obozo’s had to attend (Jarrett/Rice/Holder). I thought attending state funerals was the job of the VP but I haven’t seen any mention of him!!

I’ve seen a lot of pictures from the memorial but hadn’t seen the last one you posted. It does look like obozo is “mulling” over “what did I do wrong” and wondering how he’ll get out of the doghouse and the PM of Denmark looks properly chastised as well. Michelle looks pleased with herself. She hates white women anyway!

Additionally - does the woman not take notice of where her skirt is when she sits? I’m referring to the last one posted here but there was another one from the front view and her skirt is well up her - whatever.

Articles on Breitbart and Newsmax both indicate Cruz’ father left Cuba before Fidel came into power in 1957. A “spokesperson” in Cruz’ office has made the statements comparing Mandela and Castro. The link below describes and explains the “discrepancies” in dates his father left Cuba. Batista, also a dictator, was in power before Castro. Cruz’ father was imprisoned, there’s no doubt. http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/2011/10/ted-cruz-background-as-son-of.html/
