WOR announced its 2014 lineup Monday, a near-total makeover that moves Joan Hamburg to weekends and instead is built on afternoon institutions Rush Limbaugh, noon-3 p.m., and Sean Hannity, 3-6 p.m.

I think I read that Rush is leaving KFI in LA for a small station.WOR is obviously a major NYC station but IIRC is ain't quite in the same league as WABC.And in LA he's gonna be on a minor station. He tried the same move in Boston a few years ago..left a major station and went to an unknown one. That station went belly up and he's back on the major station.

Huh?
WOR has puny signal to the west of NYC, while WABC is booming into NY, NJ, PA, New England.
They both run 50 kW transmitters, but WABC is using omnidirectional single element vertical antenna covering large piece of land.
WOR is using 4 element directional array, beaming most of their power East, over the water, skirting Long Island S shore. Fish and boats will be pleased.
Stoooopid move, or part of gradual silencing of conservative talking dissent??? They replaced Glenn Beck with Whorealdo. Imus is boring in the morning.
At least Hannity is on SiriusXM, Rush refuses addition of satellites.

I remember Joey Reynolds. He was on WNBC, before they switched to WFAN, then he had a show on WOR. Some time ago, every Memorial Day WABC Johnny Donovan would play some old airchecks from their Top-40 days. I put some of those broadcasts from 1964, Cousin Bruce, Scott Muni, Bob Lewis, Dan Ingram, on an MP3 and play them through the radio on my 64 Chevy at the local car shows. Listening to those old airchecks is like stepping through a time portal :)

I remember the first time my parents drove to FL. We were listening to WABC as far south as Jacksonville. I've heard it said that one reason the "British invasion" music was so successful was that on a good night WABC's signal could be received in parts of the UK.

"I remember Joey Reynolds."

I've heard his talk show a couple of times. He's basically a lib, but not unlistenable.

I can pick up WABC on the DelMarVa peninsula to get Rush during the daytime.

WABC is a shadow of their former self. There was a time in New York City when they had the #1 rated show on the AM dial for every time slot from 5:00 AM through the evening. They had Curtis Sliwa in the morning, former NYC mayor Ed Koch leading up to noon, Rush Limbaugh from 12-3, Bob Grant from 3-7, and then Jay Diamond from 7 to midnight. Steve Malzberg was making his way onto the dial on the overnight shift, too.

Those were the days when John Mainelli was the program director at WABC, and that may have been the best lineup on any talk radio station -- ever.

I was never a big Mark Simone fan, but after listening to him during odd weekend shifts for several years I determined that he may have the best voice I’ve ever heard on the radio. A “Pro’s Pro” is a good description of him. That guy was born to do radio.

I gotta give Don Imus credit for one of the best quotes about the NYC radio market I've heard. He was describing the changes in the radio lineups and the changing of the guard at WOR, and he just had to take a potshot at the Gambling dynasty at WOR:

"I remember when the old man was on the air here in New York. He used to get the best ratings in New York City reading the school closings during the winter!"

LOL.

Those directional antenna arrays were laid down back when the stations first went on the air. A limited number of AM frequencies, plus US and Canadian clear channels, made for a tough radio assignment.

However, see this, from NY Daily News, below. This will interrupt many of Rush’s and Hannity’s shows:

“The Mets will be heard on WOR 710 AM starting this upcoming season, the team announced Monday. The station will broadcast spring training, regular-season and (ahem) postseason games, as well as the pre- and post-game shows.”
