True story. A couple of years back, I was walking home at night on North Capitol Street here in Washington, D.C., when two dudes randomly assaulted me before running away without stealing anything. At the time, I didn't think it was all that strange—I've lived in urban areas all my life, and plenty of people I know have been victims of anonymous street crime.

Just reading the title I thought the writer was being sarcastic.
I think we can safely conclude they were; if they had been white (or even white Hispanics) he would have known they were conservatives who were out to get him!

There is racial motivation for the knockout game. Get over it. Black guys are knocking out white, Jewish and oriental victims. That’s the sport. To call someone racist for telling the truth is as meaningless as the word racist has become.
The knockout game isn’t an anomaly of black culture and behavior. It is the outcome of idleness, hate and shifting of blame that defines much of inner city black culture. Blame it on white people, because the alternative means taking responsibility for one’s self and one’s actions. Many of these fatherless black punks lack the mental and emotional resources to take responsibility for their lives and actions. It’s not like they have useful skills suitable for honest work and building a life besides being a street hood. All that hate and condemnation has to have violent relief. The knockout game is one way to let it out.
The situation can’t be fixed by big government, and insipid writers like Matthew Yglesias, who would rather sweep the truth under the carpet than tell it, make the problem worse. There is little decent people can do, except take measures to protect themselves. The best outcome would be for decent people to kill their attackers, and thereby help black culture improve its status.

Actually, this guy’s article is in response to some other bloggers who wondered if Mr Yglesias would see the light after being a target of the knockout game.
