Driver Arrested in Ohio for Secret Car Compartment Full of Nothing

Norman Gurley, 30, is facing drug-related charges in Lorain County, Ohio, despite the fact that state troopers did not actually find any drugs in his possession.

Ohio passed a law in 2012 making it a felony to alter a vehicle to add a secret compartment with the “intent” of using it to conceal drugs for trafficking.

Gurley is the first actual person arrested under the law. WKYC in Northeast Ohio covered the arrest, with no notable journalistic skepticism whatsoever:

They pulled over the driver for speeding, but then troopers noticed several wires running to the back of the car.

Those wires then led them directly to a hidden compartment.

Around 5 p.m. on Tuesday state troopers made the arrest under the law, which is meant to combat criminals who modify the inside of their car, allowing them to store drugs or weapons inside secret compartments, which can often only be accessed electronically.

They just noticed some wires, did they? Just while in the process of handing Gurley a speeding ticket, they noticed the wires?

About as reliable as a divining rod.

Careful, there are a great many FReepers that believe divining rods work just great.

I had a 73 CJ5 as well years ago and I am trying to work out what kind of compartment could be set up under the driver’s seat. I don’t doubt yours had one.

I wished AMC Jeep would have kept the passenger side under seat storage compartment that Willlys and AMC models had until 76.

If arrested and charged with having a hidden compartment in your care (a 4th degree felony), you will have the opportunity to prove your innocence in court.

Gee, silly me; here I thought that THEY had to PROVE YOU guilty!

I never put much stock in diving rods but my grandfather passed on mom’s side was either very lucky or could make it work. He was pretty accurate and often requested.

The cops need to get the arrest numbers up, so they arrest people who haven’t commited a crime.

“There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.” - Ayn Rand

“But, Your Honor, I only installed that secret compartment so that I could smuggle Mexicans over the border”.

“CASE DISMISSED!”

I had a municipal water guy look for the shutoff valve under my front yard one time. He couldn’t find it visually, then got out his divining rod, and swore it would work. Eventually, he got serious and pulled out the metal detector.

Yup. Last Saturday one of my friends texted me at 1:00 am. He had met some of his friends from college at a bar and had had too much to drink. Asked me to come pick him up.

I texted him back that I would be there in 25 minutes.

When I got there the cops were arresting him.

The bar had closed and he had been sitting in the car and started the engine because it was cold out.

I showed one of the many cops who were there the text messages and explained that he did not intend to drive.

For that, I got to take a field sobriety test despite the fact that was perfectly lucid and have not had a drink in a few months.

I'm fine but my friend got to spend the night in jail and will probably lose his license. I plan on going to court with him and am hoping that the judge will be a bit more even headed than the police were.

Reminds me of the good old days of the Soviet Empire. Secret hiding places for anyhthign they could smuggle, like people, books, food, and money. Anyway, this is whatg happens in a society that has lost its reallity.

“A spare tire is considered prepping (hoarding). “

The spare tire itself is a secret compartment.

So is the oil pan. So is behind the door panels. So is inside the seat upholstery. So is inside one of my electric car batteries.

We are bad.

Now, that story I believe.

The cops don’t have to know, that’s the proscutions job. They could decide to drop the case, or proceed to trial on no other evidence what so ever.

This is why I will not convict in a drunk driving case if I am called for jury duty. I will only convict if there is a accident. The story you stated just leads to more drunk drivers on the road.

To me it is just another way to fatten up the government coffers while not doing anything productive.

Apparently there is a law on the books in some states that makes it a crime to obscure the make of your car.

Rut roh: there's more than a few of these guys that will be in trouble, then:
