Fox’s Red Eye Announces the Departure of ‘Repulsive Sidekick’ Bill Schulz
Mediaite ^ | November 22nd, 2013

Posted on 11/22/2013 1:07:28 PM PST by presidio9

Early Friday morning on Fox’s Red Eye, host Greg Gutfeld finally broke the silence and announced the departure of long-time “repulsive sidekick” and panelist Bill Schulz.

The brief announcement came after a prolonged, unexplained Schulz absence from the show.

“A lot of viewers have wondered where the heck Bill Schulz went,” Gutfeld said. “Sad to say he has decided to move on from the show. He’s been a close friend of mine for 13 years, and he’s been a huge part of Red Eye since its inception, and we wish him the best.”

No further reason was given for his departure.

Schulz had been with Red Eye from its inception on February 5, 2007, until this departure, often serving as the butt end of the show’s running gags and foil to host Gutfeld.

UPDATE: Mediaite received the following comment from the network, via a Fox News spokesperson:

“Fox News and Bill Schulz have decided to amicably part ways.”

It's official .... Red Eye has jumped the shark

Though it's about the only thing I still watch on FOX News these days, Greg Gutfeld has just been mailing it in since he got his gig on the daytime version of Red Eye - - The Five

I wonder if Bob Beckel realizes that he's the daytime Bill Shultz. At least Shultz didn't take himself seriously in his role. I find The Five unwatchable (in great part because of the intellectual dishonesty of Bob Beckel and Juan Williams, et. al. - they'll just say anything and the rest of the vapid panel lets them get away with it) as most of the rest of FOX news these days but The Five is the essence of FOX NEWS - liberals who will say anything posed alongside RINOs and Tokyo Rove establishment types in a series of Jerry Springer settings

The Five is just a daytime version of Red Eye with more leg chairs - I'm just not sure the 'hosts' get that yet because they try to validate by taking themselves seriously

. Good luck to Bill Shultz he was at least honest with himself about his role ,,, that's much more than most on FOX can say these days - hey it's really all about selling soap

.

Gavin and his family are my favorite guests on Red Eye. I like Sherrod Small and Michael Moynihan, too. I wonder if Bill Schulz just got tired of Greg telling him that he was worthless and America wanted him to die, etc. That’s got to become tiresome before long.

I wondered where he was. These things are rarely “amicable.”

I like Greg and his show and Bill may have been ready for a change, but when you hear something like this in politics or show business -- "He’s been a close friend of mine for 13 years ..." -- it usually means, "I hate him and I've been dying to get rid of him."

I didn’t realize the article had a point.

No surprise there. Missing points seems to be a habit for you. The article was about a FOX News entertainer leaving the network under mysterious circumstances. The discussion was about what makes a news parody program entertaining at 3AM. Does this help?

And you've been here long enough that I won't insult you by reminding you to RTFT before you post.

If you caught the announcement from Greg, he seemed to be making a genuine effort, but there was clearly not a lot of love in his voice.

I thought he was hilarious. He will be missed. He either got a better offer or he’s not well.

BTW, am I the only one secretly hoping to see Michelle Malkin in the Red Eye “leg chair” some day?

I like Michelle, but she takes herself WAY too seriously to ever appear on Red Eye. It's her loss. I always felt like Dana Pernio had a stick up her ass too. Appearing on the show and laughing along with Greg is probably what got her the gig on The Five.

You need to keep in mind that Bob Beckel, Juan Williams and Kirsten Powers are all less sleazy versions of Lanny Davis. Their job is to present the liberal point of view. None is a hard core liberal. I agree that they don't always appear to believe the words that are coming out of their own mouths. But, again, that's not what they're there for. The only way to truly understand the strength of an argument is to test it out against the strongest opposing opinions. Keep in mind that Beckel gets along quite well with Conservative brother, and Williams defended Clarence Thomas during the nomination hearings and got fired from PBS for defending Fox News. Powers is the child of academics worked in Democratic campaigns for her entire career before joining Fox and is quite obviously conflicted with herself. At some point for her a domino is going to fall and she is going to step out into the light.

Andy was a logical choice, and if Andy didn’t have his own quick humor, he wouldn’t have been on the show in his prior position either. Each to their own, but I like Andy, and I like his sense of humor, different from Bill’s as it may be.

Would it help if I told you that Andy and Greg go way back, before the show. Andy used to write jokes for Greg on his blog. The two of them put the show together. The found Shultz in a back office (or something like that), took him out drinking, and decided that he needed a place at the table. I agree that Andy can be funny. Unfortunately, his sense of timing stinks, he takes wisecracks directed at him WAY too seriously, and, as I said, he stares at the camera when he's not talking. He was much better off in his role as ombudsman, where he could get his jokes down on paper and read them. Not everybody can do spontaneity. The show suffers with him at the table. He needs to be moved back to his original role and Greg needs to find an affable liberal ASAP. I agree that Bill won't be easy to replace.

insult you

You're way ahead of me, presidio9, because I did read the post and still don't see the point. It's possible that a gossip column has a point, but even then I fail to see it. It's always about someone and what they're doing. So, what's the point?

Besides all that, I reiterate MY POINT that the world would be better without Red Eye. Gutfeld and crew are occasionally funny, occasionally entertaining, always a few yards short of a first down.

That seems to have really gotten on your bad side, but I suppose that goes with momentous threads.

Actually, you're point seems to about proving to the world that you were born without a functioning sense of humor. Why else would you feel so strongly about a cable news show that airs at 3AM, has an audience of about 400,000 viewers, and serves the function of teaching young people that conservatives are allowed to be funny.

What's the matter? Are there no kids in the neighborhood for you to yell "KEEP OFF MY LAWN!!!" at?

It does appear to be a gored ox. Sorry to have offended.

However, the show approaches funny on occasions....in the same way as sometimes I hit the bulls eye when throwing darts.

And, as both an occasional insomniac (owner of a dog who whines to water our mini-farm’s child-free-at-3-am, grass covered acreage) and a news junkie, I do get a chance to see Red Eye for a bit until I check to see if Fox Business is running news or a Nu-Wave Oven promo.

The new K-Mart jingle-boxer commercial is a good summary of Red Eye.

No offense taken. People who take the time out of their busy schedules to participate in threads and share their opinions about the 3AM TV programs they could do without are an endless source of fascination for me. Your point seems to be that you would prefer to by yucking it up with the folks at FOX Business Channel. I have no doubt you’re a delight at parties. Good move getting a dog.

I remember “Red Eye” but they spent so much time on crap that I didn’t think it was worth my time to watch, and I gave them a good try.

The point is that I dropped by a “People Magazine” thread to say almost nice things about an almost ok tv show. You would like my dog. Except for the 3 am romps, he’s an understanding soul. And, truly, who can fail to see the genius and humor of Neil Cavuto.

Just a thought about another few miles out of retreads: wonder how an Alan Colmes and Bill Shulz show would work out? Alan & Bill’s Rearview Mirror

I am seriously considering making this my new tagline for 2014.
