This song was written by the Miracles and produced by Smokey Robinson. It was to be Marvin's signature song until “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” changed the face of Motown three years later. That’s the Funk Brothers backing him up.

Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss started A&M Records in 1962 out of Herb’s garage as a means of recording and selling Herb’s trumpet tunes. This was the recording that caused A&M’s fortunes to soar. The song is from an English New Wave film starring Rita Tushingham, and the Beatles had even recorded it. This was the hit that started it all for Alpert.

BUBBLING UP

George “Shadow” Morton was one of the Brill Building denizens whose work as a producer I covered a few years ago when I went methodically through that building’s amazing roster of talent. One of his discoveries came from Queens, a girl group headed by Mary Weiss, whose voice just dripped insolence. The recording sessions featured a number of people passing through who later became stars. One was Billy Joel.
