A 19-year-old has been shot dead by police after his father dialed 911 to report his truck stolen in order to teach his son a lesson for driving off to buy cigarettes.

Father James Comstock has been left devastated after a police officer shot and killed his teenage son Tyler.

Ames police say the teenager, from Boone, drove a stolen truck onto the Iowa State University campus on Monday, where student pedestrians dodged it to avoid being run over.

There’s nothing to defend in this story.

Then why were you attempting to defend the perp?

NO, that is NOT what I said at all.

The Father should have never called the cops; the cops should not have tried to pull him over as it was an obvious family dispute. Once he fled they SHOULD have followed their own protocol...which was not to pursue since they knew who was driving. One of their own warned them TWICE not to pursue BECAUSE he was headed towards the Campus (he didn’t start out there).

I am saying, because of that, the City will be sued.

I live where this happened and went to school there. There was no common sense used by anyone involved in this situation, but for one lone voice on the radio.

More fallout from the disintegration of traditional marriage. The son came from a broken home. Mother has a new man, and I suspect there was tension between the husbands, based on the fact that daddy number two is quoted instead of the mother, who isn’t even mentioned. Total breakdown in the family unit, total disregard for the sanctity of marriage, and disastrous results.

“Comstock rammed Officer McPherson’s car.”
That significant fact is left out of the headline, and the dad’s pleading.
That changes everything. Now the truck is a deadly weapon, and the kid is using it to hurt people. (People had to get out of the way of the truck to avoid being run over.)
The cops didn’t just decide to shoot the kid.

Maybe they could have waited a little longer to see if he shut off the motor and got out.

It would be interesting to hear the accounts of some credible witnesses to the final event. I didn’t see any listed.

Good comments.

But, I have some problems with this.

In calling the police, the father obviously expected them to stop/arrest his son. You don’t call police, then ask them to do nothing. If you call people with guns for help, you can reasonably expect those guns may be used.

When the son rammed the police car, he became a deadly felon, subject to being stopped by deadly force. I don’t blame police for this outcome.

The son has paid for his actions. The father will pay for his every day for the rest of his life.

Sad.

The days of the policeman being your friend are over. Unless he knows you personally, you are just another potentially deadly felon. So, don’t call police to get your kids out of trouble. Police are trouble. I don’t like how this is, but it is.

Never make the cops part of the teachable moment unless you’re willing to sacrifice life.

It's what they are trained to do. It's what they live for. You don't shoot up all those steroids and shave your head just to look good for the wife you beat. All those neat German sub machineguns ain't gonna shoot themselves. If you want a bad situation made even worse call the cops.

If the son was dead, why did the police shoot him?

They should be charged with abuse of a corpse.

You know civilization is in big trouble when even the Brits can't write a headline that makes sense.

Just curious, did you have the same reaction to the woman who was shot by the Capitol?

Yes. I don't care about a state of mind, or what plumbing a person has. If you are a reckless threat to those around you, and you resist law enforcement - you need to get shot.

We are not an endangered species. I'm far more concerned about the safety of the public, than I am about the welfare of some belligerent driver who is aggressively attacking things with their vehicle, or driving in a reckless manner. Ignore law enforcement at your own peril - I shouldn't have to be worried about minding my own business and having some idiot kill me.

he Father should have never called the cops

So, Daddy needs to let his adult son carry on and do whatever the little thug wants? There should never be any consequences to actions?

We live in very different worlds. In my house, if I say "no", and the kids do it anyway ... there are consequences. The consequences are fair, predictable and consistent. And yes, the cop option is ALWAYS on the table. ALWAYS. If I am forced to call, I will prosecute to the limit the law, that is a given. Whether it's one of the kids, or one of the grandkids - age doesn't matter. Wanna be treated with respect and as an adult, that's fine. It's a two way street. Steal my car ... I am going to prosecute you, and when the court system gets done with you, then it's my turn.

Natually, I would expect the same if I stole their vehicle. I call it "personal responsibility".

It was an honest question, because you were so adamant about this case. I made the choice to stay out of the threads about that woman, sans one comment, in that everyone tried to place a motive on her that had no proof, ie. she was scared.

Thanks for the reply. I can’t disagree with your premise. Wouldn’t want my kids jumping out of the way of this kid, while walking their campus.

GE, #19: There’s nothing to defend in this story.

AW, #21: Then why were you attempting to defend the perp?

What should have been said in post #19 to assuage your suspicions that I support delinquent behavior?

It was what you posted in #13 and #14 that raised the question.
