I think one of the prerequisites for food stamps is a nutrition course.

Information is not the problem.

Motivation, integrity and self-respect is needed.

She’s nearly family as she was going to marry my brother (who passed away), so it’s easy to want to help but it hurts, too. My mom was helping the family but can no longer help and from what what my mom was telling me, the autistic child is extremely difficult to deal with. I guess I’ll find out soon enough!

I’d really love to know what she’s buying for that $800

$800 will bring you $400 cash on the black market.

He was already working for the university as a TA. That plus research and 30+hrs a week in the lab didn’t leave a lot of other time. He also played piano for churches on Sunday.

One of the ‘conditions’ of being a TA in that department was no other employment. The churches paid him in cash and the department overlooked it since it was ‘Sundays’. Everyone knew things were tight at his house. He was an ‘older’ student with wife/kids. The benefit of the TA was a waiver for tuition. There weren’t any jobs in that area that would have paid him, part time, the money he was making as a TA ($600/m, 20 years ago) + the cost of his tuition after taxes.

And he did look. One of the profs found out his predicament though and got his wife a job with the uni as some sort of secretarial assistant. But being told you were poor as a ‘choice’ (technically true) wasn’t helpful. Sad thing is, he’s in a fairly good tax bracket now. So he’s being soaked for the slackers who aren’t making ANY effort to better themselves.

I’ve colored my hair since I found a gray when I was 25. My car might be 17yrs old but my gray will be covered. Priorities and all. And I’ve used the box stuff from Walgreens. My mom has helped me with that, she’s artistically inclined LOL.

Boiled fish heads with spices are good eating.

Wow. I’m sorry to hear of all your family’s problems. Condolences for your brother.

Might their financial food problems be due to a special diet for the asd kid? Just asking because one of my children is celiacs. I buy rice flour in 50lb bags from Honeyville and make all our baked goods. Gluten free prepared stuff in the store is just highway robbery!

Probably some of that money goes into fingernails, and
hair braids and other REAL essentials.

My guess is there aren't any special diets involved.

My mom makes a lot of her own gluten free food. I'm hoping I don't have to later on in life.

When I’m in line behind a food stamper it always takes a little longer because of their cellphone conversations. They take their steaks out of the cart very cautiously to prevent damage to their 4” nails, and the hair, the hair. Who is kidding who? I hate them and I will tell you why, my husband 3 1/2 year post heart transplant recipient works six days a week about sixty hours to get back to where we were financially before his illness. Screw them, they don’t have a clue.

‘Till they get down to fish heads and rice, they are eating high on the hog.

Hey! I live in the Philippines now. That IS "high on the hog" here!!! They also like the highest part of the hog...

Three adults, three generations and not a father in sight.

Just the suckers who were duped by the sirens.

800 friggin bucks a month to feed 4 people????

i feed my family of 4 on half that, and i eat prime meats and chicken breast, pork loin, etc...

just buy a vacuum packer and shop at sams club...

the gimme crown has gotten out of control, when they get more cash for food than the people paying the bill do, and they STILL cannot make it last...

I was lucky in that I had an RA that was only 10 hours a week, and that waived out-of-state tuition, plus I could pay rent on a small duplex.

I don’t think I could do it now — I was in my late-20s and had the energy then, but phew, now one full-time job is enough (and luckily, they gave us the day off today after a very long and difficult project :))

Hair-wise...I probably can’t make it more than a few more years — the greys are starting to come in faster than I can pluck them, lol.

I could never understand how a conservative state like West Virginia could keep electing Leftists like Jay Rockafeller to the Senate. Then I saw a documentary about how practically the whole state is on welfare.

I have a friend with an autistic (or Aspbergers) child and he is extremely difficult to deal with. There is no way she could possibly work but her husband works. I wish there was some treatment for such children that worked.
