The Unpersuasive Case for the NSA Call Dragnet’s Effectiveness
Cato Institute ^ | 10/15/13 | Julian Sanchez

Posted on 10/15/2013 7:16:16 AM PDT by Guttlekraw

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal defending the NSA's bulk call records database as a "vital" counterterrorism tool. While this wouldn't make the program legal even if true, it also seems clear that the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) has relied, rather uncritically, on the government's assertions of "necessity" to draw the strained conclusion that every American's phone records are "relevant" to FBI counterterrorism investigations. It's thus worth pointing out how extraordinarily weak the case for the program's utility really is. Feinstein begins by recycling the claim that if only the NSA program had existed in 2001, the 9/11 hijackers could have been identified and halted before carrying out their catastrophic attack....

Feinstein then repeats the widely-debunked talking point that the NSA's call database has helped disrupt dozens of "terror events....

Perhaps because the evidence for any affirmative intelligence value is so weak, intelligence officials have lately fallen back on a new argument, also echoed by Feinstein: the "peace of mind" argument. According to this Kafkaesque line of reasoning, even if the call records program fails to detect terrorists, it's valuable in reassuring the government that Americans aren't up to anything. In other words, the program is a vital counterterrorism tool because the vast majority of citizens swept up in the dragnet are innocent. Do you feel safer yet?

Feinstein the NSA has been monitoring you too. Don’t fool yourself. If for any reason a hammer needs to come down on you, they already have the ammo to do so and you will suffer because you supported it because you won’t be in the protected class if you are no longer a useful idiot. All politicians have skeletons in their closets.

NSA may have started as a counter-terrorism tool, however, I don’t believe there can be any doubt the Obama regime is using it for political purposes, perhaps even blackmail.

I have been wondering about the uncanny control he has over the military’s general officer corp - much different than the normal CIC hierarchical relationship.

Feinstein loves the NSA spying on Evil Americans because as far as she’s concerned, we’re all Dan White.

She does nothing about millions of illegal aliens in California, a foreign invasion force hostile to the citizenry.

Nope. Those people she pals around with.

For the rest of us? A Gestapo state.

Odd that a nice Jewish girl from the west side of San Francisco would like such a thing.

The domestic spying by the NSA isn’t about catching terrorists.
It’s about harming US citizens and “political undesirables”.

The government's uses of metadata and social networks. Is it already too late? Consider:

Using Metadata to Find Paul Revere

The NSA has been creating maps of American citizens' social networks

How they will come for you. How They Hunt

The WSJ is losing credibility supporting the destruction of the 4th Amendment with Feinstein.

The NSA, FBI and IRS files on FineSwine, are the reasons why she is defending the NSA. Most if not all of the rat women $inators and congressits from California have made huge fortunes during their terms in office. Their cover stories note that their husbands are financial geniuses.

Also, Feinstein’s husband rakes in the $$$ from defense-pork and surveillance-pork contracts.

While that may be true sometimes I find more often that they make big $$$$$ by being paid as “consultants” for brokering “deals” between special interest groups to “maximize profitability” especially when taxpayer’s $$$s are involved. Lobbyists and politicians may not mingle that much in public but behind closed doors and on the phones its a whole ‘nother ballgame. The majority live affluent lifestyles that only a few can imagine; both the politicians and to a lesser degree, the lobbyists. I say this is someone who’s had to look at more than a few of them. Lets just say I’ve continuously confirmed (to myself) that what most people think about them is usually the truth though occassionally I come across a few good ones but they are vastly outnumbered by the bad.

They work both ways with spouses being financial geniuses or getting as you noted big $$$$$ as consultants. Again their spouses are often the bag guys/gals.

As it stands today we may need to expand the definitions of cronyism and corruption. Greed, fraud, cronyism, corruption, and immorality ihas brought us to the threshold we now face IMHO and the youth don’t seem to understand why. They kicked wisdom and lack of reverence (without having to even bring God into the discussion) to the curb in pursuit of material pursuits and this is what they got.

Maybe Snowden was a NSA plant to purposely intimidate the public.
