Should We Live Shorter to Save the Planet?
The National Review's Human Exceptionalism ^ | October 10, 2013 | Wesley J. Smith

Posted on 10/11/2013 7:45:19 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Humans are the enemy! A new study published in Ecology and Society claims that longer life expectancy for us is bad news for the planet. From the study by Aaron Lotz and Craig R. Allen:

We found a positive relationship between life expectancy and the percentage of endangered and invasive species in a country…The overall trend in high-income countries with improvements to the Human Development Index, which includes human life expectancy as one of its variables, is toward a disproportionately larger negative impact on a country’s ecological footprint. However, some lower-income countries have a high level of development without a high impact on ecosystem services (Moran et al. 2008).

Increased life expectancy means that people live longer and affect the planet longer; each year is another year of carbon footprint, ecological footprint, use of natural resources, etc. The magnitude of this impact is increased as more people live longer.

Bad humans! Bad, bad humans.

The answer is supposedly–it’s becoming a cliché–that we see ourselves as just part of nature:

Fischer et al. (2012) propose a “transformation strategy” that assumes that direct links between people and nature are better than indirect links. This paradigm shift would recouple the social-ecological system.

Wrong. We are the exceptional species. The environment benefits most when we see that it is our duty to manage the environment responsibly because we are human. If we redefine ourselves as just another animal in the forest, that’s just how we will act.

The authors don’t say whether we should try and live shorter lives. But that certainly seems an implication.

I recall an episode of Star Trek where residents of a planet fought a war with another planet by computer simulated attacks. "Casualties" were selected by the computer and were required to report to disintegration modules to be terminated. I suppose that technology could be adopted by the environmental wackos.

the next ice age is due to start in 2016 with the absence of sunspots.

Sunspots are actually areas where the temperature is lower than normal. So... absence of sunspots means that the overall surface of the Sun is brighter(and hotter).

That being said, it's not the sunspots that cause the changes in Earth's 'climate'.

That’s right. Their endgame is the extinction of mankind.

I wonder how many folks have any idea of what that graph means. If we have a cool or cold period like the Maunder Minimum, we will lose plenty of population. If it goes further into a nice age, which we are overdue for, the earth will have no human population problem to speak of.

We'll do fine. Neanderthals and Cro Magnons managed it with bone, stone, and stick technology. I suspect we could even find a way to melt glaciers if it became a matter of survival.

“So... absence of sunspots means that the overall surface of the Sun is brighter(and hotter).”

Sunspots are an indicator of increased solar activity. Yes, the inside of a sunspot is cooler, but the cause of them is intense magnetic storms. The more sunspots the more bright flares and increased particle output, also average brightness goes up.

During the Maunder Minimum, there were practically no sunspots and here we called it “the little ice age”. The Dalton Minimum also had cooler earth temperatures.

Sunspots peak with increased solar output. We live near a variable star!

More likely, something like “The Family”, where people are terminated around age 62 or 65. It makes room for the younger ones, eliminates those with memories of a different world and can be held up as saving the environment and health care costs.

Roger that. In fact, it’s their duty to remove themselves from the equation and cancel their carbon footprint. for the sake of the planet. See ya. Buh bye. Adios. (Or whatever you believe in, say gaia.)

Bottom line, we agree that it’s not the sunspot, but the flares and MCE’s that arise around and between them.
