McAuliffe: Virginia Should Have Colorado's Gun-Control Laws — and More
National Review Online ^ | September 24, 2013 | Charles C. W. Cooke

Posted on 09/24/2013 10:22:45 AM PDT by neverdem

Apparently deterred neither by the recent and successful liberalization of state gun laws in Virginia nor by the clear message that Colorado voters sent to lawmakers earlier in the month, Virginian gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe has added a gun-control plank to his campaign website.

Support common sense gun control measures
As Governor, Terry will support mainstream and majority supported gun control measures like universal background checks, limiting the size of magazines, and a return to the 1-gun-per-month rule. These measures respect Virginians’ right to bear arms while reducing gun violence.

With the exception of the one-gun-per-month rule, a 1993 measure that was repealed last year, McAuliffe is effectively suggesting that the state of Virginia pass exactly the same package that led to two state senators in Colorado being recalled: the extention of background checks to private sales and limits on the size of magazines. If McAuliffe is elected, it will be interesting to see how successful he will be in convincing skittish state legislators to put their careers on the line for such a fringe issue. My suspicion is not very.

As for the proposed reintroduction of the one-gun-per-month rule, McAuliffe is looking backwards in time. The repealed rule was very much of another era. For a start, the measure came into effect before the beloved NICS background check system was rolled out. As such, it should be obvious that if a) background checks are effective in ensuring that only responsible gun owners get hold of weapons, as the Left insist they are, and b) progressives truly do not want to limit ownership of firearms but only to make sure that criminals are denied the opportunity to purchase them, as they claim in public, then it really shouldn’t matter how many times a month a citizen passes a background check. This is especially true given that, as a condition of the new rule, licensed Virginian dealers must report to both the state police and to the ATF the name of anyone who buys more than one handgun in five days.

McAuliffe might make clear too whether he wishes to go back to the 1993 law or to the law as it stood on the day before repeal. By 2012, Virginia had already exempted swathes of people from the requirement, including anyone with a concealed-carry permit, all law enforcement, all private security companies, and anybody who “lost” a weapon within 30 days and needed to replace it. To go back to the latter would simply be silly; to go back to the former, on the other hand, would be radical.

What I want to know is what’s wrong with Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli? McAuliffe has always been a hard left Clintonista. Why would anyone in their right mind expect anything less from a Governor McAuliffe than rabid gun control? It boggles the mind!

Recent polls suggest McAuliffe is leading by anything from 5 to 8%. This guy is a self-admitted hustler, and his business record is chock full of government/business collusion. As for his record as a public servant, either in the legislature or in other positions with the executive department? It’s NIL.

What the heck is wrong with people in Virginia????

Should be very interesting. The entire Northern half of the state would seem to be his for the taking. That’s only because the population has an incredibly high number of transplants from NY, NJ, and MD, who all brought their attitudes and voting preferences with them. And most of that occurred within the last 10-15 years or so. It’s as if the entire Eastern seaboard up and slid South, covering Virginia like slime. And, that’s why I left. Virginia simply isn’t the same state I grew up in.

WayneS: “There was a day when Terry McCarpetbagger would have been tarred, feathered and ‘escorted’ to the State line.”

He’s a despicable Clintonista who has enriched himself off of government.

It's from McAuliffe's website.

Has VA changed that much that they could seriously elect this turd?

I would say if this turd wins one can move VA to the Blue column. I live in VA and McAuliffe has run lots of ads attacking Cuccinelli as some Pro-Life zealot. This is an attempt to appeal to the socially liberal women living in the DC suburbs. His only other ad has been attacking Cuccinelli for accepting legal gifts from the same dude who lavished the current Gov McDonnell and his wife with tens of thousands of dollars of gifts and cash.

I moved to the New Market area to escape the left lurching eleventh congressional district in North Carolina.

Now it has a republican, Meadows in the seat. Republican legislature and governor. Maybe I should have stayed there, nah, A Sheville is still there. Too many RINO chesters and Humbert types run the republican party in WNC. Nasty place, gross !!!!

Fight the loons to the last breath we have.

Right turns, tight lines

Not just Virginia. An entire nation voted to put a man with precisely those credentials, and questionable citizenship, into the White House. Twice.

McAuliffe’s record stinks. This is low hanging fruit—easy pickings—for any investigative reporter. Too bad all we have in the media these days are propagandists. I bet they’re working overtime in Virginia to present Terry in the most favorable light. If they do mention any of his shenanigans, it will be a brief mention hidden somewhere in their overflowing praise about Terry McAuliffe, the “job creator.” SPIT!

I miss New Market. I remember it when it was a quiet little town, with diagonal street parking. Had a great little cafe, with wood floors. Had only one matronly aproned waitress named “Butch,” who took your order with a smoldering Marlborough between her lips. No liquor, beer, or wine by the drink or in restaurants in those days. Some counties were completely “dry.” Soda pop, milk, water, coffee, or tea was all. Different times. Very different state. Very different.

Hey McAuliffe - Call Hickenlooper and ask him how that's going. He'll probably lie to you too.

It's ironic that the first gun control laws in this country were intended to disarm black folks.

I think if you research it you will find the first gun laws were in NY, NY and intended to disarm the Irish and other non-English European immigrants... The boroughs' bosses and the country's first "police" force were having trouble extorting armed immigrants.

Not one of the laws the Dims passed here would have prevented the perp of the Aurora Mall shootings from buying his guns or committing the murders. He had a high capacity magazine, but didn’t use it.
