WTOP-FM reports via Twitter

UPDATE: Ground stop at Reagan National Airport is for departures http://bit.ly/1eUGWul.

MSNBC reports says reason for Reagan shut down is because of helicopter traffic for Navy Yard shooting.

I seriously doubt it. A little pop gun couldn’t reach where the planes have to go. Maybe if he had a RPG.

Ah, that makes more sense than just “in case the shooter will come to the airport”.

An airport in NYC closed as well? Anybody hear anything else about this yet?

News says 5 people shot and are in critical condition. But I’m sure the details will change several times before it’s all over.

BTW, Navy Yard is up the Anacostia. Not at all right across the Potomac. Quite a serious row.

If everyone carried, this would have ended long ago! (if in fact the shooter had the balls to even begin knowing that people would be armed!)

The flight path doesn’t take planes over the Navy Yard, the problem is the subway stop at the Navy yard makes the airport only a few minutes away.

The only notice I could find is that flights from Teeterboro Airport to Reagan National have been grounded because of the shooting.

No, I only saw the NYC info posted here, but I haven’t seen anything about it anywhere else. Perhaps the poster mis-heard it.

An airport in NYC closed as well?

No. NYC airports are experiencing departure delays for planes bound to Washington Reagan, for obvious reasons:

Due to OTHER / SECURITY, departure traffic destined to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington, DC (DCA) will not be allowed to depart until at or after 10:30 am EDT.

The same message is displayed for all the airports in the area. It hasn't spread to the entire country (i.e. DFW, MSP) yet.

I don’t count medium caliber rifles as pop guns when firing at a commercial plane less than 1000 AGL doing around 200 kts as planes do when in an extended pattern.

Because of the Navy Yard, even though it’s clear across a very busy town.

It's a very short trip by water.

All NYC airports report it, if you click on the details. You can see the same message as far away as Orlando:

I think you’re right about it being helo related. FBI HRT is at Quantico and there are military reaction units at Davidson Airfield at Ft Belvoir. Both would approach the Navy Yard going upriver past Reagan National. They probably want to keep the airspace clear.
